Hie und da stimmt unser Verfasser mit der angelsächsischen Abhandlung über Astronomie aus dem zehnten Jahrhunderte, welche Wright in den Popular Treatises p. 1-19 mitgetheilt hat, und die einen Auszug aus Beda's Schrift De Natura Rerum enthält; Philippe de Thaun's Livre des Creatures ebendaselbst p. 20-73 kommt kaum dabei in Betracht. Die Zusammenstellung der verschiedenen naturwissenschaftlichen Kategorien in ihrer populären Fassung scheint unserem Verfasser eigenthümlich, obwohl die Vermuthung einer Uebersetzung nicht schlechthin abzuweisen ist. Der Styl und die Sprache unseres Gedichtes schliesst sich an die der Lebensbeschreibungen der Heiligen und Robert of Gloucester's, so dass wir hier die Sprache der mittleren Grafschaften, des alten Königreichs Mercia, und insbesondere dem Dialekte begegnen, welcher, am Swereflusse heimisch ist. Die Beimischung romanischer Elemente ist noch nicht bedeutend, man zählt auf 100 germanische etwa 5 romanische Bestandtheile. Der Vers unseres Dichters ist im Wesentlichen die Langzeile von sieben Hebungen, wie wir sie bei Robert of Gloucester und in den Heiligenleben gemischt mit Zeilen von sechs Hebungen und freiester Behandlung finden.
