Senator THOMAS. Just a word. If Congressman Cartwright has not already done so, I desire to enter his appearance in favor of the bill. His congressional district is on the Oklahoma side in which these bridges are located, and yesterday afternoon he made that request of me, which I now make.

7.

One other word, Mr. Chairman, if I may. After I introduced these bills in the Senate, and especially the bill that is now under consideration, the Durant-Denison bill, I received some letters from landowners and citizens in the immediate vicinity on the Oklahoma side, protesting against the proposed location of the bridge. It was claimed by them that this location was some distance from the existing bridge and that if the bridge was built where it is now contemplated it should be built, it would cause them to go a considerable

distance to reach the new bridge, they protested rather strenuously. The protests came to me especially from Mr. Gilbert and Mr. Borah. In order that I might be advised, not being personally advised, I sent telegrams to a number of persons in Bryan County that I thought could advise me from the county's best interest standpoint; and without exception the replies I get are favorable to the present location. And as an evidence of the sentiment in that county I desire to have incorporated in the record a message from the president of the Bryan County Chamber of Commerce, Mr. E. M. Evans; and with your permission I will read the message:

Senator ELMER THOMAS,

DURANT, OKLA., February 11, 1930.

United States Senate, Washington, D. C.:

Replying to telegram you sent citizens, the proposed new bridge is west of present toll bridge and will require Gilbert and Borah to travel about 2 miles to cross. If toll bridge were adopted or location made east of present_bridge they would travel not more than quarter mile. Gilbert filed suit in Federal court to take control out of Texas and Oklahoma courts and is stockholder in toll bridge. This is a personal interest of protestants. New location for road and bridge is by far on best location and be less expensive to maintain. General public on both sides of river favor new bridge location, except some of those living east and downstream on Oklahoma side. Sentiment is unanimous for the free bridge and only contest is as to location and then by very small part of people. E. M. EVANS,

President Bryan County Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. LEWIS. May we leave for the benefit of the committee maps showing the location of these bridges and the blue print showing the present road from Durant to the bridge between Durant and Denison, and the proposed new location? I will give Mr. Bailey a copy of the map.

(The maps referred to were thereupon filed with the committee.) Senator DALE. The committee stands adjourned.

(Thereupon, at 2.40 o'clock p. m., the subcommittee adjourned to meet at the call of its chairman.)
