INTRODUCTION.

THE Gospel according to St. Matthew, in the form in which it is here presented, is an attempt to render this portion of God's Word more intelligible by the use of a greater variety of type, and by the substitution of short paragraphs in place of the usual verse arrange

ment.

The forms in which the Bible is usually printed, namely, divided into short verses, or in long paragraphs with but few breaks, do not assist the reader to understand the meaning. The various modes of indicating quotations, conversations, pauses, etc., employed in ordinary books are not used in printing the Sacred Volume. In this edition of St. Matthew's Gospel all these means are used.

1st. The gospel is printed in short paragraphs, although the numbering of the verses is retained in the margin.

2nd. The words of our Lord (and in one or two

cases where they occur, of the First Person in the Blessed Trinity) are printed in black type.

3rd. Quotations from the Old Testament are printed in Italics, and the references are given at the foot of

the page.

4th. Personal pronouns, for either Person of the Holy Trinity, begin with capital letters.

5th. Words not in the original are printed in the same type as the rest, but are enclosed in square brackets. 6th. Inverted commas are employed to indicate conversation, etc:

7th. A few notes are added, chiefly to explain difficult and obsolete words and phrases.

It is believed that by the use of this arrangement of St. Matthew many of those difficulties with which the young especially have to contend in reading the gospels will be removed, for they are usually printed in such small type, and in other respects appear so much unlike other books, that interest and inquiry are repelled instead of being excited. The gaps between the verses seem to them to imply a want of continuity, and it frequently happens that passages are misunderstood and therefore misapplied. Much of this may be remedied by employing those means of modern typography here used, and which will to a very great extent render the gospel selfexplanatory.
