The modified project recommended would then provide for creating and maintaining by dredging the following channels:

a. Across Pinole Shoal in San Pablo Bay, about 40,600 feet in length, 600 feet wide, and 35 feet deep, with overdepth dredging of 2 feet.

b. Thence through Mare Island Strait, about 16,400 feet in length, 600 feet wide, and 30 feet deep from the mouth upstream to the turning basin, which would be 1,000 feet wide in front of the quay wall, 30 feet deep except the northerly corner; this corner would be 26 feet deep as shown on Yards and Docks (Navy) map No. 96188 herewith and on drawing No. 51-1-16,' which is a part of this report, all with overdepth dredging of 3 feet.

The new work under this modified project recommended is estimated to cost $192,000 for Pinole Shoal and $289,000 for Mare Island Strait and turning basin, a total of $481,000, including the new work remaining to be done under the existing project. The annual cost of maintenance is estimated at $135,000 for Pinole Shoal and $205,000 for Mare Island Strait, a total of $340,000 annually during the period of three years that would be required to complete the new work, and $340,000 annually thereafter.

The appropriation should be made annually as follows:

This work should be done with hired labor using Government plant. This report was completed so far as practicable in October, 1924, but final completion of it was delayed till May, 1925, pending receipt of information from the Secretary of the Navy as to the needs of his department with reference to channel dimensions.
