chains and cables which lead, through pipes, from the hollow-jet valves to the cabinet. Remote controls are not provided. À 490-gallon oil supply tank is located on top of the cabinet to keep the minimum oil level above the gate cylinders. An oil-level gage is.located on one end of the oil tank. The control system can be filled by gravity from the oil tank. The estimated weight of the control system is 6,500 pounds.

(b) Design.--The control system is designed for a maximum operating pressure of 2, 000 pounds per square inch, using a light-weight hydraulic oil having a viscosity of about 150 seconds Saybolt universal at 100°F A pressure switch limits the system pressure to 1, 800 pounds per square inch for opening or closing the ring-follower gates. The oil pressure for opening the hollow-jet valve is limited to 500 pounds per square inch by a relief valve, and the pressure for closing is limited to 900 pounds per square inch by a pressure switch. The designs specified that only one ring-follower gate or one hollow-jet valve should be operated at a time. For normal operation, both pumps. operate; however, if one pump or motor should become inoperable, a ring-follower gate or a hollow-jet valve can be operated at half speed with one pump. Approximately 8 minutes are required to close, and about 7 minutes are required to open a ring-follower gate. Approximately 9 minutes are required to close a hollow-jet valve. The opening time is variable and it was expected that the controls would be set to open the gate in 6 to 9 minutes.

83. 30-Inch Ring-Follower Gate. (a) Description. --The 30-inch ring-follower gate is required for shutoff service and emergency closure if the 30-inch hollow-jet valve (see sec. 84) should become inoperable. A ring-follower gate was considered the most suitable for this installation because of the absence of any obstruction in the fluidway of the highvelocity flow. The gate was furnished under invitation No. DS-5439.

The ring-follower gate is located in the control house upstream from the hollow-jet valve as shown on figure 58. The gate assembly is shown on figure 59. The ring-follower gate is operated from a control cabinet located in the control house (see sec. 85). Remote controls are not provided. A direct-reading indicator is located adjacent to the hoist cyl. inder. The ring-follower gate is fabricated primarily of welded steel and consists basically of a body, a leaf, and a hydraulic hoist which is an integral part of the gate. The gate is of the slide type with a leaf made to include a follower ring having a circular opening equal to the diameter of the pipe. The ring provides an unobstructed water passage when the leaf is in the open position. The hoist has a 12-inch-diameter cylinder and a travel of 2 feet 8-1/2 inches. The estimated weight of the ring-follower gate is 10,000 pounds.

(b) Design.--The ring-follower gate is designed to operate under a maximum reservoir head of 380 feet with a hoist oil pressure of 1,000 pounds per square inch. The hoist capacity was based on the weight of the leaf plus the sliding friction of the gate seals using a friction coefficient of 0.6. Bronze seats are used on the gate body to provide a lowfriction and rust-resisting surface for the leaf. A hand-operated mechanical latching device is provided on the upper cylinder head to hold the gate in the open position.

The allowable unit stresses for the various materials used in the gate were based on the yield point and ultimate tensile strength of the materials. The smaller of the following allowable tensile stresses was used:

(1) Steel and monel (rolled or forged) --40 percent of the yield point or 25 percent of the ultimate strength, except for bolts where the design stress was limited to 25 percent of the yield point or 16.5 percent of the ultimate strength.

(2) Steel or monel (cast)--33 percent of the yield point or 20 percent of the ultimate strength.

(3) Brass or bronze (rolled)--33 percent of the yield point or 16.5 percent of the ultimate strength.

(4) Brass or bronze (cast)--33 percent of the yield point or 16.5 percent of the ultimate strength.

Compressive stresses are the same as the allowable tensile stress for the various materials. Shear stress is 0.6 of the allowable tensile stress for the various materials.
