To testify to the veracity of what I assert, I beg leave to refer the Public to the following

John Stewart having been confined in the Provost at his own Request, until it could be proved that the Fire was not occasioned by any Neglect of his; it appearing that the Fire did not begin at his House, he is discharged by the General's order. CHARLES ROOKE Aid de Camp.

New York, August 7, 1778.

No vessel is to lie near any wharff, unless by a permit signed by the Superintendent of the port, and that only to load and unload, and are then to have an anchor astern, to be able to haul off immediately when ordered, or in case of fire.

A strict obedience to this order is necessary for the safety of this city and the shipping. The master of any transport or other vessel that does not observe it, shall be severely punished.

Col. William Bayard, 6 Houses and Stores that rented for £520 [This worthy gentleman suffered greatly in the Fire of September, 1776]

Mr. Gerardus Duyckinck, 7 Houses.

Mr. Peter Mesier, 2 Dwelling Houses.

Mr. David Provost, 4 Houses, and 2 pulled down.

Capt. Thomas Brown, 4 Houses.

Mr. Varick, 1 House.

Estate of Mr. Andrew Meyer, 1 House.

David Matthews, Esq., our worthy Mayor, being dangerously wounded in the Leg last Monday Morning at the Fire, where he attended from the Begining to the End thereof, and did great Service, is now in a fair Way of Recovery, tho' the Second Day after the Fire a Mortification took Place.-Gaine's New York Gazette, August 10, 1778.

Commanding in New York

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, many Inhabitants of this City, suspect that the late Fire was not the Effect of Accident but Design. Any Person or Persons, that will discover to Major General JONES, one, or more of the Incendiaries, or those aiding in so horrid a crime, so that he, or they may be brought to justice, shall receive ONE HUN. DRED GUINEAS, on the conviction of such Offender or Offenders. And, as a further Encouragement to bring this Guilt to Light, if the Informer has been an Accomplice, his Excellency the Commander in Chief, is pleased to promise a Pardon to the Informer, on the Conviction of such Offender or Offenders, besides the above Reward of ONE HUNDRED GUINEAS.

It is reported that a Man suspected to have been concerned,

being pursued, was wounded in the Back with a Bayonet, imme.
diately after the fire broke out.

In the Account of the Fire mentioned in our last we omitted mentioning, all the Stores of Mr. Peter Meysier, on Cruger's Wharff: That Family and their Relations have lost in the Course of 23 Months, no less than 15 Houses and Stores, some of them large and elegant Buildings. - Gaine's New York Gazette, August 17, 1778.

IT having been represented to Major General Jones that many Inhabitants have goods saved from the fire in their possession, the owners of which have not appiied for them: It is the General's Orders that they immediately send such goods to the Mayor's office in Wall-street, where the owners may apply. Any person detaining or concealing such goods will be deemed guilty of theft, and punished accordingly
