On the breaking out of a fire, notice should be immediately communicated to the nearest Alarm Station, the location of which is hereafter indicated. The locality of a fire will be indicated on the gongs in the Engine and Police Station Houses, and upon the fire bells, by the striking of blows corresponding to the number of the Alarm Station, or locality nearest to the fire. EXAMPLES.-Two strokes-an interval-then three strokes, indicates 23 (twenty-three), which will be repeated at longer intervals, and will give notice of a fire in the vicinity of the Engine-house, Henry street, near Gouverneur street. 123 (one-two-three), given in the same manner, will indicate a fire in the vicinity of Old slip and Water street. The fire bells below Twenty-third street will not be struck for fires occurring above that boundary. The fire bells at the towers in Thirty-third, Fifty-first, and Eighty-fifth streets will not be rung for fires below Fourteenth street; signals, indicating the localities hereinafter mentioned, will be struck upon those bells instead of districts as heretofore. The hours of 9. A.M., and 9, P.M., on Sundays, and 12, M., and, 9 P.M., each week day, will be struck upon the fire bells of this city, the time being given from a clock at the Central Telegraph Office.
