and consummate the work, at the proper cost of the contractor and his sureties. Councils endorsed the action of the Water Committee, and I proceeded according to instructions to complete the work. This work is now under way, and is progressing as well as the nature of the work will permit.

The amount of pipe laid this year is in excess of last year 2,480 feet. The quantity and sizes of same will be found in the tabulated statement annexed hereto, as will also the amount of and sizes of stop gates and fire plugs; also the amount of stop gate and fire plug boxes used during the year.

The laying of pipe on the Montgomery Hill District has been expensive on account of the nature of the digging, it being nearly all rock.

The coal account this year will compare favorably with other years, when it is considered that the extra speed of the engine on account of increased consumption of water, the constant running of pumps at well of tunnel, also hoisting engine for same, and in addition the Howard Street Pumping Station, all consumers of coal.

The expenditures made during the year for the different departments of the Water Works is annexed hereto, in tabulated form, showing the cost of streets and different pumping works, to which I refer you for information regarding the disbursements of our appropriation during the year.

In closing this report I take the opportunity of thanking the gentlemen in charge, and in the employ of the different departments of the Water Works, for the efficient and faithful performance of the duties imposed on them. I also tender sincere thanks to the gentlemen of the Water Committee and members of Councils for the many courtesies extended me during the year.

The number of families supplied with water is 13,264, an increase over last year of 325.

There has been erected during the year within reach of City water 284 houses; of this number 174 were brick and 110 frame, apportioned in the several wards as follows: First Ward, 3 brick and 13 frame; Second Ward, 53 brick and 14 frame; Third Ward, 16 brick and 8 frame; Fourth Ward, 8 brick and 4 frame; Fifth Ward, 35 brick and 17 frame; Sixth Ward, 43 brick and 26 frame, also one tannery and one foundry; Seventh Ward, 1 brick and 5 frame; Eighth Ward, 9 frame and 1 tannery; Ninth Ward, 5 brick and 5
