WHEREAS an Act was paffed by the Legislature of this Province, in the forty third year of his Majesty's reign, intituled, "An Ad for the better preferva "tion of his Majefty's Government, as by law happily established in this Province;" which Act was to have continuance only until the end of the present Seffion of the Provincial Parliament; And whereas it is expedient, that the faid Act fhould be further continued; Be it therefore enacted, by the King's most excellent Majefty, by and with the advice, and confent of the Legislative Council and Affembly of the Province of Lower Canada, conftituted and affembled by virtue of, and under the authority of an A&t paffed in the Parliament of Great Britain, intituled, " An Act "to repeal certain parts of an Act paffed in the fourteenth year of his Majesty's "reign," intituled, "An Act for making more effectual provifion for the Government "of the Province of Quebec, in North America, and to make further provifion for the "Government of the faid Province" and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the fame, that the said Act, and all matters and things therein contained, fhall continue to be in force, until the first day of January, one thousand eight hundred and nine, and from thence to the end of the then next Seffion of the Provincial Parliament. II. And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, that this Act, and the former At may faid A&t intituled, "An Act for the better prefervation of His Majesty's Government. "as by law happily established in this Province," and each or either of them may be altered, amended, or repealed at any time, during the prefent Seffion of the Provins cial Parliament. WHE (14th April, 18c8.) HEREAS an Act was paffed by the Legislature of this Province, in the forty third year of the reign of his prefent Majefty, intituled: An A&t for the better "regulation of the Militia of this Province, and for repealing certain A&s or Ordi"nances therein mentioned," and whereas the term fixel for the duration of the faid Act, to the first day of the month of July, of he year of our Lord. one thousand eight hundred and feven, is expired; except, in as much as it was provided by the faid Act, that if at the expiration of the term fo fixed, the Province was in a state of War, Invafion, or Infurrection, the faid A&t fhould continue in force, until the end of fuch War, invafion or infurrection. And Whereas, great inconveniences may refult to this Province, in the poffible cafe, that the unexpected news of a Peace, might arrive at the very moment we shall be under the nece lity of preparing to repel an expected attack, from another quarter, if a further term, for the duration of the faid Act, is not fixed. IV. AN ACT to authorife the Magistrates of the City of Montreal, to erect forty temporary Stalls on the New Market Place, and to borrow a certain fum of Money for that purpose. (14th April, 1808.) W HEREAS a certain A&t paffed in the forty feventh year of his Majesty's reign, intituled: "An A&t for building a new Market Houfe in the City of Montreal, for removing part of the Stalls on the Old Market Place, and regulating the fome, "and to authorife the borrowing a certain fum of money for thofe purpofes," could not be carried into execution, the Magiftrates of the laid City of Montreal, having been unable to procure on loan, the necessary sum of money to that effect; and whereas prefent circumstances do not afford any profpect, that the faid Magiftrates, for fome years to come, can effect the borrowing of the faid fum of money; and therefore, for the convenience of the Inhabitants of the faid City, it would be proper and ex. pedient, to provide for the building of temporary Stalls, for felling and expofing to fale, all kinds of Butchers Meat, and other commodities on the faid New Market Place. Be it therefore enacted by the King's Moft Excellent Majefty, by and with the advice and confent of the Legislative Council and Affembly of the Province of Lower Canada, conftituted and affembled by virtue of, and under the authority of an Act paffed in the Parliament of Great Britain, intituled "An Act to repeal "certain parts of an A&t paffed in the fourteenth year of his Majefty's reign," intituled," An Act for making more effectual provifion for the Government of the Pro"vince of Quebec in North America, and to make further provifion for the Government "of the faid Province." And it is hereby enacted by the authority of the fame, reft temporary that the Magiftrates for the City and District of Montreal, or any five of them, being refident within the faid City of Montreal or the Suburbs thereof, are hereby autho rifed to erect, and caufe to be built, forty temporary Stalls on the faid N w MarketPlace, of fuch form and dimensions, as they thall tee fit and proper, for the public utility, and for the purpose of telling and expofing for fale, all kinds of Butchers Meat and o her articles of provifion, under fuch rules and regulations of Police, as the faid Magiftrates are authorised to make, by virtue of an Act palled in the for y fecond year of his Majefty's reign, intituled: "An Act to provide for the more effec "tual regulation of the Police, within the Cities of Quebec and Montreal and Town of "Three Rivers; alfo for extending regulations of Police to other Towns and villages in "certain cafes, and for repealing the Acts or Ordinances therein mentioned."
