or hereafter may be in the hands of the faid Receiver General, and which have been or fhall be levied or collected under any Act or Acts of the Legislature thereof, and fuch fum or fums fo iffued, be applied towards the clearing and improvement of the channel of the rapids of the river Saint Lawrence between La Chine and the City of Montreal, and towards, the removal of impediments in the channel of navigation for batteaux from Montreal to Lake Saint Francis, or for improving the fame by towing paths or otherwife in fuch manner and by fuch means as fhall by the faid Commiffioners, or any two of them, be considered most proper and useful for effectuating the purposes abovefaid.

II. And be it further enaded by the authority aforefaid, that the faid Commiffioners, or any two of them, fhall, at the next Seffion of the Legiflature, Governor and Le- lay before the Governor, Lieutenant Governor or Perfon adminiftering the Gogiflature. vernment of the Province, the Legislative Council and the House of Affembly, respectively, a statement of the expenditure of the money now remaining from the former grant of the Legiflature, and of the abovefaid one thousand Pounds or fuch part thereof as fhall be then expended, with fuch eftimates and oblervations in respect to further improvements in the internal navigation of the River Saint Lawrence, as fhall appear to them expedient and proper, either for the ascent or defcent thereof.

And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, that the Inspector at teauguay to make a Return to the Chateaugay fhall, at the clofe of the navigation of the enfuing feafon, tranfmit to Commiffioners of the Commiffioners herein before mentioned a return of the number of fcows and Scows an Rafts that have paffed rafts which fhall have paffed during the laft and prefent years, refpe&tively; and in such return, shall specify, as far as may be practicable to him, the quantities of flour, wheat, pease, pork, pot and pearl-afhes, and other produce contained in the faid fcows, and the general contents of the faid rafts, fo as to diftinguish those which conveyed oak or pine timber ftaves, boards, fire-wood or other articles from each other; and a copy of tre faid return, fhall, by the faid Commiffioners, be laid before the Governor, Lieutenant Governor or Perion adminif tering the Government, the Legislative Council and the Houle of Assembly, respectively.

II. Et qu'il foit de plus ftatué par l'autorité fufdite, que les dits Commiffaires ou deux d'entr'eux, préfenteront à la prochaine Seffion de la Légiflature, au Gouverneur, Lieutenant Gouverneur, ou à la Perfonne ayant l'adminiftration du Gouvernement de la Province, au Confeil Législatif et à la Chambre d'Affemblée respectivement, un état des dépenfes de l'argent actuellement reftant fur la première conceffion de la Légiflature, et fur les fufdites Milles Livres, ou de telle partie d'icelles qui fera alors dépensée avec telles eftimations et observations à l'égard des améliorations ultérieures à la navigation intérieure du Fleuve Saint Laurent qu'il leur paroitra expédient et convenable, foit pour la montée ou defcente d'icelui.

III. Et qu'il foit de plus ftatué par l'autorité fufdite, que l'Infpecteur à Chateauguay transmettra à la fin de la navigation de la faifon prochaine aux Commiflaires ci-après mentionnés, un retour du nombre de bacs et cages qui auront paffé durant la dernière et la présente année refpectivement, et spécifiera dans tel retour, autant qu'il pourra le faire, la quantité de fleur, de bled, de bois, de lard, de potaffe et perlaffe, et autre produit contenus dans les dits bacs, et ce que contiendront généralement les dites cages de manière à diftinguer les unes des autres, celles qui tranfporteront du chêne, du pin, des douves, planches, bois de chauffage et autres articles, et une copie du dit retour fera par les dits Commiffaires mife devant le Gouverneur, Lieutenant Gouverneur ou la Personne ayant l'adminiftration du Gouvernement, le Confeil Législatif et la Chambre d'Affemblée refpectivement.

IV. Et comme il paroit par le compte de déboursés et la représentation faite par l'Entrepreneur aux Commiffaires, et fur leur recommendation pour qu'il lui foit accordé une indemnité, que le dit Entrepreneur a fouffert des pertes par les mauvais temps extraordinaires durant le cours de fes travaux dans les rapides de Saint Louis, et par les dommages caufés à fes ouvrages préparatoires par la descente des cages: qu'il foit donc de plus ftatué par l'autorité fufdite,

An Act to repeal an Ordinance made and paffed in the twenty fifth year of His Majefly's Reign, intituled, "An Ordinance to prevent "the exportation of unmerchantable Flour and the falfe taring of "Bread and flour Cafks," to regulate the packing and infpection of Four and Indian Meal, and to provide for afcertaining the quality of Bilcuit in future.

WHEREAS an Ordinance was made and passed in the twenty fifth year of His Majefty's Reign by His Honor the Lieutenant Governor and Legiflative Council of the late Province of Quebec, intituled, "An Ordinance to prevent the exportation of unmerchantable Flour and the falfe taring of Bread and flour Cafks" And whereas it hath been neceffary to make further and more efficient regulations regarding the fame, Be it therefore enacted by the King's moft Excellent Majefty by and with the advice and confent of the Legislative Council and Affembly of the Province of Lower Canada, conftituted and affembled by virtue of and under the authority of an Act paffed in the Parliament of Great Britain, intituled, "An Act to repeal certain parts of an A&t paffed in "the fourteenth year of His Majefty's Reign, intituled, " An Act for making "more effectual provifion for the Government of the Province of Quebec in North "America," and to make further provifion for the Government of the faid Pro"vince." And it is hereby enacted by the authority of the fame, that from and after the paffing of this Act, the faid Ordinance made and paffed in the twenty fifth year of His Majefty's Reign, intituled, An Ordinance to prevent the exportation of unmerchantable Flour and the falfe taring of Bread and flour Casks," shall be and the fame and every part thereof, is hereby repealed.

II. And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, that from and after the paffing of this Act, each and every manufacturer of Wheat and packer of Flour, fhall provide himself or themselves, with iron or other metal brands, containing

taining his or their name or names wherewith he or they fhall brand or caufe to be branded, each and every Cafk of Flour packed for fale or exportation, in a plain and diftinguishable manner before delivery thereof, and previous to fuch infpection as is herein after provided, under the penalty of one fhilling for each and every barrel of Flour lo delivered without fuch Brand marks.

III. And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, that all Flour to be hereafter packed for exportation, fhall be honeftiy and carefully packed in new oak, beech or afh Barrels, with heads of the fame, well feafoned and bound with at least ten wooden hoops, three whereof at each end with a lining hoop within the chimes, the whole well fecured by nails; and further, that each and every Cafk fhall have the tare or weight thereof legibly marked in large figures on the end, under the penalty of one fhilling, for each and every Cafk on which the fame fhall not be fo marked at the time of packing the fame, or which shall not be of one or other of the foregoing defcription of Barrels.

than the following weights viz. containing ninety eight pounds nett, one hundred and ninety fix pounds nett, or two hundred and twenty four pounds nett, avoir-du-pois weight, which weight fhall be branded on one end of each and every Barrel, previous to the delivery thereof, under the penalty of one fhilling, for each and every Cafk offered for sale or infpection, without fuch brand mark.

V. And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, that in branding the different qualities or defcriptions of Flour, the fame fhall be defignated as follows, viz. that of the quality, called fuperfine, by the letters S. F: of the quality called fine, by the letter F: of the quality called middlings by the letters MID': and the quality called, Farine entiere, by the letters ENT. by which latter defcription of Flour fhall be understood the whole produce of the wheat when ground, excepting the coarse bran and pollard; and when the Wheat from which Flour of any of the above qualities hath been manufactured, was previously kilndried, the fame fhall be branded on each and every Barrel, either at length or by the letters KILN. D: and all Barrels or Hogsheads in which Indian Meal fhall be packed, shall be branded by the packer, and the tare of the Cafk mark. d on one end as well as the net weight thereof, and the Barrels in which Indian Meal shall be so packed, fhall contain one hundred and fixty eight Pounds nett avoir-du-pois weight of the faid Meal.
