TH E Subject of the following Treatise being of such universal Concern, it is apprehended that any Apology for making it public is unnecessary; and that it is likewise unnecessary to apologize for the Liberty I have taken to declare in what I differ from a Gentleman, whose Opinions have been lately much countenanced and adopted; the great Respect paid to that Gentleman's mathematical Publications having rendered a public Disquisition of them the more requisite, as such a Disquisition may tend to obviate the Mistakes which he has either from Error or Design endeavoured to promulge.
