A Short History of Anaesthesia: The First 150 YearsA Short History of Anaesthesia presents a comprehensive history of anaesthesia and analgesia in a concise and well referenced format enabling readers to use this book as a springboard for research into most aspects of the history of anaesthesia. The exciting developments since the 1840s have been professionally collated in this historical textbook. The 1870s saw advances in the surgical care of patients, of which anaesthesia played a pre-eminent part, as did other advances such as antisepsis. These were part of an explosion of new science and technology, altering forever the direction of progress in medicine. The 1990s is a significant decade for anaesthesia with 1994, 1996 and 1997 being the 150th anniversaries of the first anaesthetics using nitrous oxide, ether and chloroform. 1998 celebrates the centenary of the first successful spinal anaesthetic. |
