Page 59 - In America, the powers of sovereignty are divided between the government of the Union and those of the States. They are each sovereign, with respect to the objects committed to it, and neither sovereign with respect to the objects committed to the other.
Page 9 - No railroad or other transportation company shall grant free passes, or passes or tickets at a discount, to any person holding any office of honor, trust, or profit in this State ; and the acceptance of any such pass or ticket, by a member of the Legislature or any public officer, other than Railroad Commissioner, shall work a forfeiture of his office.
Page 59 - The sovereignty of a State extends to everything which exists by its own authority or is introduced by its permission ; but does it extend to those means which are employed by Congress to carry into execution powers conferred on that body by the people of the United States ?
