ENDERS DAM

Missouri River Basin Project

Purpose: Irrigation water, flood control, sediment retention, recreational facilities,
fish and wildlife preservation, and stream pollution abatement.
Location: On Frenchman Creek, a tributary of the Republican River, approximately
50 miles west of McCook, in Chase County, Nebraska.

Constructed: 1947-1951.

Water supply: Frenchman Creek.

Maximum flood: 9,000 second-feet (1940).

Reservoir

Area: 2,557 acres.

Controlled storage: 80,730 acre-feet.

Irrigation storage: 36,013 acre-feet.

Dead storage: 8,467 acre-feet.
Flood storage: 30,040 acre-feet.
Surcharge: 6,210 acre-feet.

Dam

Type: Rolled earthfill and rockfill.

Foundation: Ogallala formation.

Slope protection: Riprap on gravel blanket on upstream face, rockfill on downstream face.

Dimensions:

Height: 103 feet above streambed, 146 feet above excavation.

Crest length: 2,603 feet.

Crest elevation: 3137.5.

Volume: 1,600,000 cubic yards.

Slopes:

Upstream, 4 to 1 to 23.7-foot berm at elevation 3070, 3 to 1 to elevation 3115, and 2-1/2 to 1 to 30 foot crest at elevation 3137.5.

Downstream, 4 to 1 to 10-foot berm at elevation 3066.5, 2-1/2 to 1 to 10-foot berm at elevation 3091.5, 2-1/2 to 1 to 10-foot berm at elevation 3117, and 2 to 1 to crest.

Cutoff trench: 30-foot bottom width with 1-1/2 to 1 side slopes.

Greatest depth of excavation: 43 feet.

Dike

Type: Rolled earthfill and rockfill.

Foundation: Loess.

Slope protection: Riprap on upstream face from station 99+39 to station 142+50,

Dimensions:

selected material on upstream face from station 142+50 to station 160+72, seeded topsoil on downstream face.

Height: 26 feet above foundation.

Crest length: 6,133 feet.

Crest elevation: 3135.5.

Volume: 150,000 cubic yards.

Slopes:

Upstream, 3 to 1 from station 99+39 to station 142+50 and 8 to 1 from station
142+50 to station 160+72.

Downstream, 2 to 1.

Spillway and Outlet Works

Type of spillway: Gated concrete overflow-chute type with stilling basin.
Crest elevations: Spillway, 3097.0; outlet works, 3080.0.

Maximum discharge:

Spillway, 200,000 second-feet.

Outlet works, 1,448 second-feet.

Outlet conduit: 7 feet in diameter, 512 feet long.

Spillway gates: Six gates 50 by 30 feet in size.

Stilling basins:

Spillway, reinforced concrete with chute blocks and dentated end sills.
Outlet works, reinforced concrete with deflector wall.

Concrete: 45,627 cubic yards.

Reinforcing steel: 4,500,000 pounds.
