NOTICE.

The Bibliography of America consists principally of the "Bibliotheca Americana" from 1820 to 1861, in four volumes, compiled by the late O. A. ROORBACII, and the "American Catalogue," from 1861 to 1866. These volumes are known to be quite defective, and many suggestions have been made by correspondents as to the best mode of supplying the omissions. In the present volume an attempt has, in part, been made to do so, and it is proposed to carry out the plan here commenced, in the successive volumes of the "American Catalogue," until all deficiencies are supplied.

There has been no separate classification of the omissions here inserted, but they will be found in regular Alphabetical order, and can be easily recognized by their date, which in all cases is given. It was not until the work was far advanced that this idea was entertained, and as this involved much time and labor, a fear of delaying the issue of the present volume too long has prevented it from being as full as it might otherwise have been; but in the future volumes there will be no expense or labor spared until all the omissions as far as possible are included. The compiler hopes this new feature in the "American Catalogue" will be appreciated by the Trade generally, and by Librarians particularly.

NEW YORK, September, 1871.
