LONDON BRIDGE.

A Prospect of Old London Bridge immediately after the building of the houses, with description by JOHN NORDEN. This View was taken in Queen Elizabeth's time (1595-1604), but has upon it, engraved a later date, the Arms of Sir John Gore, Lord Mayor in 1624. The copper plate appears to have been lost for twenty years, and then published with some additions. The only copy known is in the Sutherland collection. It was re-engraved for W. Scott, May's Buildings, Lond. 1820, and published at 10s. 6d.

Its compilation is a marvellous effort of combined operations, as it now comprises a Street Directory, Trades Directory, Court Guide, Postal Directory, Conveyance Directory, and many other digests of great practical utility. Published annually, 17. 16s.

The earliest known View of London
(extending from Lambeth Palace to
Greenwich) is that drawn by Antonio
Wyngaerde, on several sheets, extend-
ing 10 feet in length, taken between 1558
and 1563, preserved in the Sutherland
Collection, Bodleian Library, Oxford.

The earliest engraved View, Map, or Plan of London is that taken near the beginning of the Reign of Queen Elizabeth (circa 1560) by RALPH AGGAS, on 8 sheets, and is extremely rare; a copy is in the Sloane Collection, British Museum.
