41 ¶ And as foon as the lad was gone, David arofe out of a place toward the fouth, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himfelf three times: and they kiffed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.

42 And Jonathan faid to David, Go in peace, forafmuch as we have fworn both of us in the name of the Lord, faying, The Lord be between me and thee, and between my feed and thy feed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.

CHAP. XXI.

Nob to Ahimelech the prieft and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and faid unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?

2 And David faid unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath faid unto me, Let no man know any thing of the bufinefs whereabout I fend thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my fervants to fuch and fuch a

3 Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is prefent.

4 And the priest answered David, and faid, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.

5 And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth, women have been kept from us about these three days, fince I came out, and the vefiels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were fanctified this day in the veffel.

6 So the priest gave him hallowed bread; for there was no bread there, but the fhew-bread that was taken from before the Lord, to put hot-bread in the day when it was taken away.

7 Now a certain man of the fervants of Saul, was there that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was Doeg an Edomite, the chiefeft of the herd-men that belonged to Saul.

8 And David faid unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear

or

or fword? for I have neither [man is mad: wherefore then

brought my sword nor my weapons with me, becaufe the king's bufinefs required hafte.

9 And the priest faid, The fword of Goliath the Philiftine, whom thou fleweft in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapt in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other fave that, here. And David faid, There is none like that, give it me. 10 ¶ And David arofe and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

have ye brought him to me?

15 Have I need of madmen, that ye have brought this fellow to play the madman in my prefence? shall this fellow come into my house?

CHAP. XXII.

against me, thou and the fon of Jeffe, in that thou haft given him bread, and a fword, and haft enquired of God for him, that he should rife against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

14 Then Ahimelech anfwered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy fervants, as David, which is the king's fon-in-law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house?

19 And Nob, the city of the priests, fmote he with the edge of the fword, both men and women, children and fucklings, and oxen, and affes, and fheep, with the edge of the fword.

20 And one of the fons of Ahimelech the fon of Ahitub, named Abiathar, efcaped and fled after David.

21 And Abiathar fhewed David, that Saul had flain the Lord's priefts.

22 And David faid unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, -when Doeg the Edomite was 5

CHAP. XXIV.

ND it came to pass

when Saul was returned from following the Philiftines, that it was told him, faying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.

2 Then Saul took three thousand chofen men out of all Ifrael, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.

3 And he came to the fheep-cotes by the way, where was a cave, and Saul went in to cover his feet and David and his men remained in the fides of the cave.

4 And the men of David. faid unto him, Behold the day of which the Lord faid unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it fhall feem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.

5 And it came to país efterward, that David's heart fmote

6 And he faid unto his men, The Lord forbid that I fhould do this thing unto my mafter the Lord's anointed, to ftretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord.

7 So David stayed his fervants with these words, and fuffered them not to rife against Saul: but Saul rofe up out of the cave, and went on

his way.

8 David alfo arofe afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, faying, My lord the king And when Saul looked behind him, David ftooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.

9 And David faid to Saul, Wherefore heareft thou men's words, faying, Behold, David feeketh thy hurt?

10 Behold this day thine eyes have seen how that the Lord had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave and fome bade me kill thee, but mine eye fpared thee, and I faid, I will not put forth mine hand againft my lord; for he is the Lord's anointed.

11 Moreover, my father, fee, yea, fee the skirt of thy robe in my hand; for in that

12 The Lord judge be tween me and thee, and the Lord avenge me of thee: but mine hand fhall not be upon thee.

13 As faith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand fhall not be upon thee.

14 After whom is the king of Ifrael come out? after whom doft thou purfue? after a dead dog, after a flea.

15 The Lord therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and fee, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.

16¶ And it came to pass when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul faid, Is this thy voice, my fon David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.

17 And he faid to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou haft rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.

18 And thou haft fhewed this day how that thou haft
