up by the Civil Service Commissioners for the Army Examinations to be held in the year 1881.
The author has to thank both teachers and students
for the favour with which the last series was received.
While aware from long experience of the great value of Examination Papers as an aid to the preparation of candidates, and of the eagerness with which they are sought after and worked out, he has avoided in these questions anything of the nature of “ cramming."
Under the present conditions, and, having regard to the severity of the competition at every important examination, a mere collection of questions that have often been set or an attempt to anticipate the arrangements of examiners would be of small service to a candidate.
The object of the author has rather been to encourage and facilitate an accurate acquaintance with the prescribed course, and to provide a guide to the manner
