A TREATISE ON

ARITHMETIC,

COMBINING

ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS,

Adapted to the best mode of Instruction in Common Schools and

Academies.

BY JAMES S. EATON, M. A.,

Instructor in Phillips Academy, Andover, and President of the Essex County
Teachers' Association.

The following letters from well-known teachers will convey some idea of the merits of the work:

I have examined with care the Treatise on Arithmetic by Mr. J. S. EATON, and find it combining great excellences. In its clear and scientific arrangement, in the perspicuity and conciseness of the rules, and in the full explanation of the principles involved, I know of no work of the kind superior to it. It deserves, as it will no doubt receive, an extensive circulation. The test of its merits in the school-room has been highly successful.

S. H. TAYLOR, LL. D., Andover, Oct. 19, 1857. Prin. Phillips Academy. After a careful and repeated examination of various portions of Mr. Eaton's Treatise on Arithmetic, I most heartily concur in the above recommendation of the work.

REV. J. L. TAYLOR,

For many years a member of the Superintending School Committee of Andover.

MR. EATON,
Dear Sir, I am well pleased with your Arithmetic. It happily obviates some
difficulties that I meet with in teaching from other works.
J. KIMBALL, B. A.
Prin. Mifflinburg Academy.

My Dear Sir, I have examined your Arithmetic cursorily, and like what I have s en of it very much. We expect to introduce it at the beginning of next term. L. BARROWS, Prin. Rittenhouse Academy. Philadelphia, Pa., Oct. 17, 1857.

I have examined your book as far as Reduction, and have never used an Arithmetic which so nearly coincides with my own plan of teaching. J. WESTCOTT, M. A. Associate Prin. Rittenhouse Academy.

The above work has just been issued, and already the Publishers have received most flattering notices of the book. It is being introduced into Academies and Schools, in various parts of New England. School Committees and Teachers are invited to examine this work, with a view to introduction, for which purpose copies will be supplied on application, or sent by mail, postage paid, on receipt of 15 cents in stamps.
