Thereupon, the Hon. A. W. Stovall, of the county of McNairy, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was declared to be duly elected temporary Speaker.

The Clerk appointed Senators Keith and Simerly to escort the temporary Speaker to the Chair.

Upon taking the Chair, Mr. Stovall said:

Gentlemen of the Senate :-I thank you for the kindness you have shown me in selecting me to preside over the temporary deliberations of this honorable body, not only because I am one of the youngest members of this body, but in choosing me you have done honor to the section of country I have the honor of representing on this floor. I hope that your temporary deliberations will be tempered with moderation and guided with wisdom. In accepting the position to which you have chosen me, I ask the aid and assistance of each of the members of the Senate; and, without saying anything further, I now announce the Senate of Tennessee temporarily organized and ready for the transaction of such business as may properly come before it.

Mr. Shaver moved that the Senate do now go into the election of a permanent Speaker without the formality of nominations; Which motion prevailed.

The first ballot was then taken with the following result:

TUESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 6, 1885. The Senate met at 10 o'clock A. M., pursuant to adjournment, temporary Speaker Stovall in the Chair.

On a call of the roll all of the Senators answered to their names.

The Journal of yesterday's proceedings was read and approved.

Mr. Ramsey offered the following resolution:

Senate Resolution No. 1.

Resolved, That the Rules of the last Senate be adopted for the government of this Senate until permanent Rules shall be adopted.

The rules were suspended, and the resolution was taken up and adopted.

The temporary Speaker, Mr. Stovall, ordered the Clerk to call the roll for the fourth ballot for permanent Speaker.
