Because matter-energy markers must be conveyed over some channel if
information is to be transmitted, and because in living systems both matter-
energy and information flow at finite rates through distributors or channels of
limited capacity, ...
The region where the step-function change occurs for one sort of matter-energy
or information input may be somewhat differently located in space than that for
another sort of input, but usually they overlap quite precisely. Operations which ...
active transport, and the consequent gradients between substances inside and
outside the cell in the same way that matter-energy boundary processes are
when the marker is an alpha-coded chemical molecule. Cells are also

I purchased this book many years ago and found it very enlighting. The shredout concept was of particular interest to me in that it provided ways to look at various living systems from micro to macro. It has a lot of detail which I never was able to get around to studying, but appears to have influenced my thinking which was later documented in a series of blogs http://www.bcswonline.com/blog/index.html
I still have a copy and refer to it.
