said river, as he or they may judge to be most proper and convenient, and as rear the said bridge as conveniently may Le, and there to take for passage over the said river, by such ferry or ferries, such rates and duties as are granted by this act for the toll or pontage aforesaid: Provided, That such furry or fontics shall not continue for any longer time than shall be necessary for repairing or rebuilding the said bridge. And provided also, That in case the proprie, tor or proprietors of the said bridge shall at any time hereafter neglect or refuse to rebuild or repair the said bridge and causeway for the space of six months, he or they, and every of them, shall from thenceforth forfeit his or their right, title, or property and interest, of, in or to the said bridge; and the toll and duties hereby granted to him or them, for pontage or passage over the same, shall cease and determine, any thing herein contained to the contrary notwithstancing: And provided also, That in case the s.id bridge shall at any time hereafter be rebuilt, and at any time when the said bridge or causeway shall be repaired, if any one or more of the said proprietors shall neglect or refuse to pay his or their proportionable part or parts of the expence thercof, for the space of three months af ter public notice given thereof at the said bridge, and in the public gazette for three weeks, then every such proprietor and proprictors so neglect. ing or refusing, shall forfeit Lis and their right, title, property and interest, of, in and to the said bridge, and the tolls and duties hereby granted for pontage or passage over the same, to the person or persons who were at the expense of rebuilding the said bridge, or repairing the said bridge or causeway, any thing herein contained to the contrary notwithstanding.

An ACT to permit John Holman to come with his Negro slaves into and to remain with them in this state.

WHE

HEREAS John Holman, by his petition to the legislature, set forth circumstances of peculiar hardship attending the operation of the sixteenth section of an act, entitled, "An act to regulate the recovery and payment of debts, and for prohibiting the importation of negroes for the time therein mentioned." And whereas, on an investigation into the merits of the said petition, the truth of such circumstances was evinced to the satisfaction of the legis lature:

An ACT to incorporate the Roman Catholic
Church of Charleston.

HEREAS sundry persons professing the Roman Catholic religion have presented a petition to the kegislature, stating that for the purpose of worshipping God according to the rites and ceremonies of their church, they have by subscription and otherwise raised a suf ficient fund for building a church and providing for the maintenance of a pastor, and the payment of other proper officers of the same; and that their good intentions would be more effectually carried into execution by an act of incorporation, and therefore praying that such an act might be passed: And whereas religion ought to be pro
