§ 34. Under has a great many different meanings in French. We only give a few examples :

1. He is under the earth, and that is better than under lock and key Il est sous terre et cela vaut mieux que sous clef

2. The carriage is under cover

La voiture est à l'abri

3. Under ordinary circumstances
Dans des circonstances ordinaires

4. To be under vows

Être lié par des vœux

5. This ship is getting under way
Ce vaisseau se met en route

WITH.

§ 35. With is not always translated by avec, but often by other prepositions. A few examples are given :—

1. He struggled with him
Il lutta contre lui

2. The man with red hair

L'homme aux cheveux rouges

3. The pocket-book has been seen with my uncle
On a vu le portefeuille entre les mains de mon oncle

4. Matters were changed with him

Les choses étaient changées pour lui

5. These reflections had their weight with him
Ces réflexions avaient leur poids auprès de lui

6. He is fed with the same food

Il est nourri des mêmes aliments

7. We are satisfied with little
Nous sommes contents de peu

8. My lips are parched with thirst
Mes lèvres sont brûlées par la soif

9. They fought with pistols

Ils se battirent au pistolet

10. Fill this glass with wine
Remplissez ce verre de vin

11. My father is very angry with you

ENGLISH PREPOSITIONS NOT TRANSLATED.

§ 36. It often happens that the English preposition is not translated in French. A few examples are given (see THIRD FRENCH BOOK, § 250):—

1. We accept of your decision
Nous acceptons votre décision

2. I approve of the sentence
J'approuve l'arrêt

3. Wait for your brother
Attendez votre frère

4. He looks for his friend

Il cherche son ami

5. This general is acquainted with me
Ce général me connaît

6. They asked for his grandfather
Ils demandaient son grand-père

7. I wish for nothing

Je ne désire rien

8. Listen to that bird

Écoutez cet oiseau

9. My father sent for my teacher

Mon père a envoyé chercher mon professeur

0. He has atoned for his evil deeds

PREPOSITIONS USED IN FRENCH AND NOT IN ENGLISH.

§ 37. It also often happens that a preposition must be used in French, though there is none in English. A few examples are given (see THIRD FRENCH BOOK, § 251):

1. He discharges his duties well

Il s'acquitte bien de ses devoirs

2. I want twenty pounds

J'ai besoin de vingt livres

3. Pity the sorrows of a poor blind man
Ayez pitié des chagrins d'un pauvre aveugle

4. We distrust that man

Nous nous méfions de cet homme

5. The king remembered this officer
Le roi se souvenait de cet officier

6. The child enjoys the pleasures of youth
L'enfant jouit des plaisirs de la jeunesse

7. The ministers advised the prince not to do this

CONJUNCTIONS.

§ 38. The student experiences sometimes a difficulty in not knowing when to employ the right word for however, yet, in French.

(1) CEPENDANT, however, is used in a general and indefinite sense; it merely affirms in opposition to appearances that are seemingly contrary,

as:

He is poor, yet he is happy

Il est pauvre, cependant il est heureux
