Bearing pressure on the projected area of a bushing was limited to 4,000 pounds per square inch. Figure 59 shows the discharge curves for the two 16.75- by 34-foot fixed-wheel gates. 55. Hoist Structure for the Two 16. 75- by 34- Foot Fixed-Wheel Gates. The hoist structure is permanently located over the spillway intake structure and is required to support the two spillway gates, gate hoists, and controls (sec. 54). A steel structure was selected in preference to a concrete structure for ease and speed of erection. The hoist structure was furnished under invitation No. DS-5664. (a) Description. -- The general arrangement and details of the 16.75- by 34-foot fixed-wheel gate hoist structure installation are shown on figures 60 and 61. Figure 62 shows the structure as assembled in the shop. The hoist structure is a structural steel framework of welded and bolted construction, consisting principally of a hoist deck supported by three columns which bear on the concrete spillway. Gate and hoist guides built in the columns of the structure serve to guide the gates and hoist sheave blocks during operation. Doors and ladders in the columns structure facilitate maintenance and inspection of the gates, hoists, and controls. The estimated weight of the hoist structure is 121,000 pounds. (b) Design. --The gate hoist structure was designed as a rigid frame to withstand various combinations of loading caused by hoisting effort required to lift the gates, wind, earthquake, dead load, and temperature change in accordance with the specifications for Steel Railway Bridges of the American Railway Engineering Association. 2/ The following allowable unit stresses, taken from the specifications for Steel Railway Bridges, 2/ were used in proportioning the members (stresses are in pounds per square inch): L = length, in inches, of unsupported flange, between lateral connections b = and knee brace flange width, in inches. 56. Hoists and Controls for the 16.75- by 34-Foot Fixed-Wheel Gates. Two hydraulic hoists with a single control are provided to operate the two 16.75- by 34-foot fixed-wheel gates at the spillway structure. The two hydraulic hoists were furnished under invitation No. DS-5662, and the controls under invitation No. (D)90, 088-A. 2/Specifications for Steel Railway Bridges for Fixed Spans not Exceeding 400 Feet in Length, American Railway Engineering Association, 1960. |
