The ever increasing cost of supporting and developing a school system such as that of Los Angeles City requires an enlightened and patriotic public. The heavy item of expense will always be that of salaries. Upon the advisability of paying good salaries there seems to be little or no question. I am inserting herewith a very interesting table covering the expenditures for salaries alone for the last three years. Immediately following is a summary of total expenditures:

COMPARATIVE REPORT SHOWING AMOUNT PAID FOR SALARIES ONLY, BY LOS ANGELES CITY SCHOOL
DISTRICT, ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOL, YEARS 1910 TO 1914.

*In 1911-12 and 1910-11 teachers of Special Schools included in Compulsory Education Department.

These tables show the following interesting facts:

(a) That the salary expenditures increased 78.3% in four years.

(b) That the salary expenditures in 1913-14 constituted 86.6% of the total expenditures.

If any material saving is to be made in school expenditures it would seem inevitable that teachers' salaries must suffer. I very seriously doubt that the tax paying public is prepared to either demand or submit to this plan.

The following two tables are also interesting in that they show an itemized statement of total expenditures in the Elementary and High Schools for the school year 1913-14:
