Chapter 162.

An Act to authorize John J. Matthes to keep and maintain a ferry across the Mississippi river.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. That John J. Matthes, his associates or as- Authorized to signs, shall have the exclusive right to keep and maintain keep ferry. a ferry across the Mississippi river, from the south-west quarter of fractional section eleven, in town nine north, and range six west, to the most convenient point on the opposite side of said river, for the term of fifteen years.

SEO. 2. Said ferry shall be subject to such regulations as other ferries, according to law, in the manner in which licensed ferries shall be kept and attended ;and no ferry shall be licensed within one mile of said ferry.

SEC. 3. The said John J. Matthes and his associates or assigns, are hereby allowed one year from the passage of this act, to build and construct a regular ferry-boat to be used on said ferry: Provided, He shall furnish the neces- Proviso. sary facilities for ferrying that may be required to accommodate the travel during that time. Chapter 163.

An Act to vacate the plat of "Maitland Place," in the city of Milwaukee.
The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in
Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. The plat of ground known as "Maitland Place," situated in the north east quarter of section number thirty, township number seven, north of range number twenty-two, east, being in the fourth ward of the city of Milwaukee, is hereby vacated.

Chapter 164.

An act to authorize the laying out of a state road from Muscoda, Grani
County, to town two, range one east, in Lafayette County.

The People of the State of Wssconsin, represented in
Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. James Moore and William G. Spencer, of Commission. Muscoda, and Wm. Chapman, of Wingville, are hereby appointed commissioners to lay out and establish a state road commencing in the town of Muscoda, via Wingville, in the county of Grant, thence to the fourth principal meridian, following said line as near as practicable, until that line intersects the road (in town two, range one east, of the fourth principal meridian, in Lafayette county.) leading from Belmont, to the city of Galena. And Charles Brockway, James H. Knowlton and David Stoneheaver, are hereby appointed commissioners to lay out and continue the said road from the said point of intersection, on the nearest and best practicable, route to the village of Shullsburgh.

Compensation.

SEC. 2. The commissioners appointed by this act shall upon the performance of the work be entitled to such compensation for their services as the supervisors of the counties where such services are performed, shall deem just and proper.

SEC. 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

Chapter 165.

An Act to amend an act entitled an act to incorporate the city of Green Bay.
The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in
Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. Section four of the act to which this is amendatory, is hereby amended by striking out of said section four, the words "Monday" and "May" wherein it

occurs, and insert the words "Tuesday" and "April," so as to read "Tuesday" and "April" in lieu of "Monday and "May," thereby providing for the holding of elections in said city on the first Tuesday in April.

SEC. 2. All that part of section four conflicting with the provisions of this act is hereby repealed.

SEC. 3 This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

Chapter 166.

An Act to provide for laying out and establishing a state road from Newport, in Sauk county, to Sextonville, in Richland county.

The People of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. E. B. King and E. Norris, of Sauk county, Commissionand Martin Strowd, of Richland county, are hereby ap- ers. pointed commissioners to lay out and locate a state road from Newport, in Sauk county, to Sextonville, in Richland

county.

SEC. 2. It shall be the duty of said commissioners to lay Duty of comout and locate said road on the most practicable route from missioners. Newport to Hubbard's bridge, on section twenty-nine, township twelve, north of range five, east, and from thence on the most practicable route to Sextonville.

SEC. 3. The duties reposed upon said commissioners by virtue of the act shall be completed before the first day of January, eighteen hundred and fifty-six.

SEC. 4. No expenses or charges for laying out or establishing said state road shall be paid out of the state treasury, nor shall any expense for the same be chargeable to Sauk county nor to Richland county, except so far as the necessary expense incurred in running that portion of the road lying in said Richland county.

SEC. 5. This act shall be in force from and after its passage.

Chapter 167.

A bill to authorize John H. Knapp and others, to keep and maintain a Ferry across the Red Cedar River.

The People of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Seuate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. John H. Knapp, Henry L. Stout, Andrew Tainter and Thomas B. Wilson, their heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, shall have the exclusive right and privilege, for the term of ten years, of keeping and maintaining a ferry across the Red Cedar River, to and from any land owned by them at Menomonee, county of Dunn, in township twenty eight (28,) range thirteen (13,) section twenty-six (26.)

SEC. 2. The ferry shall be subject to such regulations as other ferries are or may be by law subject; and the proprietors thereof shall be entitled to receive for crossing, Rates of fer- any vehicle drawn by two horses, or one yoke of oxen, forty cents; for one horse and buggy thirty cents; for each additional horse or ox, ten cents; for cattle and horses in droves, five cents each; Provided, That hogs and sheep shall not be charged more than three cents per head, and for foot passengers ten cents each.

SEC. 3. No ferry shall be established within one half mile of the point where said ferry shall be established. Approved March 12, 1855.

Chapter 168.

An Act to amend an act entitled "an act to incorporate the Sheboygan and
Mississippi Railroad Company," approved March 8, 1855.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in
Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. The Sheboygan and Mississippi railroad company are hereby authorized and empowered to lay out, extend and construct a branch railroad to the railroad authorized to be constructed, by an act entitled "an act to

incorporate the Sheboygan and Mississippi Railroad Company," approved March eighth, eighteen hundred and fifty-two: said branch railroad to commence at some point between the city of Sheboygan and the west line of the county of Sheboygan, and run from thence, in a northwesterly direction, to some point on the Fox river between the east line of Outagamie county and Lake Winnebago; the point of the commencement and of the termination of said branch railroad to be fixed by the board of directors of said company, as shall be for the best interest of said company; and the board of directors of said company are hereby authorized to increase the capital stock of said company to such an amount as they may at any time deem expedient to carry out the provisions and objects of this act.

SEC. 2. All the provisions of the act of which this is amendatory, in relation to entering upon, taking and making compensation for lands, for surveys, right of way, and construction, and all other provisions of said act respectively, not inconsistent herewith, shall apply as well to the said branch railroad, hereby authorized, as to the main line of the road of said company.

SEC. 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

Chapter 169.

An Act to repeal an act entitled "an act to incorporate the Saint Louis Falls and Nemadji Railroad Company."

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. The act entitled "an act to incorporate the Act repealed Saint Louis Falls and Nemadji Railroad Company," ap

proved April 3, 1854, be and the same is hereby repealed, and this act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
