REPORT OF THE MEDICAL AND SANITARY OFFICER.

OCTOBER 14, 1912.

SIR: Herewith is a statement showing the number of cases, both medical and surgical, arising during working hours, which were treated in the Government Printing Office emergency room during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1912. There is also included a list of employees who have received compensation for injuries during that fiscal year, under the provisions of the act of May 30, 1908, providing for compensation to artisans and laborers injured in the service of the United States. The number of employees quarantined because of contagious diseases is also shown.

Two thousand four hundred and ten cases were treated during the year, besides 1,004 redressings of wounds in those cases where the employees remained at work after being injured and did not apply for compensation. One thousand one hundred and forty-one of the cases were surgical and 1,269 were medical, as is shown in the tables accompanying this report. During the preceding fiscal year there were 961 surgical and 1,142 medical cases and 990 redressings.

It will be noted that the amount paid as compensation for injuries received in cases where it was not possible for the employee to remain at work was $3,393.04, as compared with $4,995.85 for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1911. The sum expended for compensation for injuries is very small when the large number of employees and the amount expended in wages is considered.

Respectfully,

The PUBLIC PRINTER.

WM. J. MANNING, M. D.,
Medical and Sanitary Officer.

No. 21.-Statement showing surgical and medical cases treated in Government Printing Office emergency room July 1, 1911, to June 30, 1912.
