EXPLANATORY NOTE

This volume has been prepared pursuant to chapter 260 of the Laws of 1909, which authorized the preparation of " an analytical subject and section index of the Consolidated Laws reported by the Board of Statutory Consolidation."

In the following pages the index of each of the Consolidated Laws is kept together and arranged under the title of the law. In addition to the separate law indexes thus created, the main subjects treated in the individual laws have been taken out and brought together under proper main headings in the general index, so that this volume contains not only a comprehensive subject index of the entire consolidation taken as a whole but also a complete index of each separate law or chapter. In instances when it has not been deemed expedient to duplicate material under the title of the law and also elsewhere in the index the complete analysis has been placed under the law title and the other headings have been made complete by cross-references.

An alphabetical arrangement is used throughout, except that in the Insurance Law, Membership Corporations Law, and Religious Corporations Law it was found necessary, in order to avoid a construction of the laws, to make references under the heading "General Provisions." This heading is placed at the beginning of the indexes of the laws mentioned rather than in its strict alphabetical order.

the

Reference in every instance is made to both section and page, page reference indicating the page on which the section desired begins. The only exception to this rule is in the index of the State Law, where, on account of the length of certain sections, the page references are made to subdivisions.

Each main heading in the index is known as a title. General cross-references and notes are placed at the beginning of each main title. Cross-references to main index headings are printed in small Black Face Type. Cross-references to subheads under a particular title are indicated by a reference to the main heading,

followed by the subheading in Italic. The words "above, this title" and "below, this title " are used in the indexes of the individual laws to refer to headings printed in ROMAN CAPITALS under the law title. References from a subdivision to the same. subdivision are indicated by the words "above, this subdivision" or "below, this subdivision."

A list of the abbreviations for Consolidated Law titles used in the index follows this note.

The official edition of the Consolidated Laws will be used not only by the members of the legal profession but by all State and local officers who have occasion to consult the laws governing them in the performance of their respective duties. The indexers having this fact in mind have endeavored to present an index based upon uniform rules and adapted to the needs of the various individuals who will refer to it. No claim of perfection is made for this index, but the indexers earnestly hope that they have produced an index which will prove not only logical in its details of arrangement and distribution but, as well, a practical and ready guide to the contents of the Consolidated Laws.
