CHAPTER 1.

AN ACT defining the privileges of the President, Directors, &c., of Turn

pike Roads.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, That, hereafter, it shall not be lawful for the President, Directors, Treasurer, Secretary and Superintendent of any of the Turnpike Roads in this Commonwealth, in which the State is interested as a stockholder, to pass through the toll gates upon any of said roads, in which they are managers, free of toll, except when called on business pertaining to said roads; and in all other respects to stand in the same attidude as other travelers upon said roads, which is to take effect on the first day of April next.

AN ACT to extend the charter of the Bank of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, That an act to establish the Bank of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, approved November 29th, 1820, and the several acts amendatory thereof, shall be, and the same are hereby extended and continued in force until the first day of February, one thousand eight hundred and forty six, so far as to enable said Bank to collect the debts due, and close up its

CHAPTER 7.

AN ACT to amend an act, entitled, an act reducing into one, the several acts for apprehending and securing Runaways, approved January 16th, 1798. SEC. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, That when a slave shall be commitJailer to advertise slave ted to the jail of any county in this Commonwealth, under the when commit- provisions of an act, entitled, "an act reducing into one, the several acts for apprehending and securing runaways, approved January 16th, 1798," it shall be the duty of the Jailer of such county, within ten days thereafter, to cause an advertisement, with a description of the runaway's person and wearing apparel to be published in a newspaper nearest the residence of such Jailer, for the space of six months, by monthly insertions. If the owner of such slave claim not within that Slave to be time, the Sheriff of said county shall publish an advertisesold if owner ment, in like manner, for the sale of said slave, at the Court House door in said county, on a Court day, with a description of said slave, and his wearing apparel, for the space of at least two months, by weekly insertions in said newspaper; and shall sell said slave on a credit of six months, taking from the purchaser, bond with good security, to have the force and effect that replevin bonds now have by law, payable to the Commonwealth of Kentucky; which bond shall be returned to the Circuit Court Clerk's office of the county where said sale was made; and upon which bond, the Clerk, when the same shall become due, shall issue an execution as in other cases on replevin bonds, directed to the Sheriff of the county, who shall proceed to collect the same, in the same manner other executions are collected; and the Sheriff and his sureties shall be Duty sheriff. liable to all the responsibilities which attach to them on other How sheriff executions; and the same proceedings shall, in all respects, be had in the name of the Commonwealth; and for any violation of the duties of the Sheriff, either in the collection of the money, or the failure to pay over the same, as hereinafter directed, he shall pay over to the Jailer his fees and the costs of advertising, and to the taker up of said slave, such reward or charges as he shall be entitled to by law; he shall retain the cost of his advertising, and five dollars for making the sale, and the residue of the money, remaining in his hands, he shall pay over to the Treasurer of the Commonwealth for the use of the owner of the slave.

CHAPTER 12.

AN ACT to reduce the price of vacant lands in Laurel county.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, That the County Court of Laurel county shall have the power, and is hereby authorized, to reduce the price of vacant lands in said county, to any sum not less than two dollars and fifty cents per hundred acres.
