Mathématiques appliquées et calculatrices programmables: Notation algébrique (TI 57.58.59)

Front Cover
Masson , Jan 1, 1982 - Computers - 256 pages

This book was published in 1982, at Masson, Paris, by two French University Mathematics Professors: Liviu Solomon (Université de Poitiers) and Marcel Hocquemiller (Université de Montpellier).

The back cover states: "This book is intended for science students; University candidates, IUT students, engineers and scientists who want to find cost-effective solutions to their current problems.

The authors show how, with an inexpensive calculator, one can study problems that were once the work of specialists trained and equipped with powerful machines."

"Ce livre s'adresse aux étudiants en sciences; aux candidates au grandes écoles, aux étudiants des IUT, aux ingénieurs et scientifiques désireux de trouver à peu de frais des solutions chiffrées à leur problèmes courants.

Les auteurs montrent comment, avec une calculatrice peu coûteuse, on peut étudier des problèmes qui étaient autrefois lápanage de spécialistes entraînes et pourvus de machines puissantes."

In 1982, a programmable TI calculator was costly but still affordable. By contrast, personal computers were mostly out of reach – for example, in 1983, IBM was announcing the IBM PC XT, with a 10MB hard drive, 128KB RAM and  360KB floppy drive. It cost US$5000.

The authors demonstrate how, using a programmable calculator (TI 57, 58 or 59), one can tackle geometry and linear algebra problems, like GAMMA functions, BESSEL functions, ellipticintegrals, double integrals, research zero and limits of a function, calculate derivatives, or solve differential equations.

The book includes 120 programs for TI 57.

LIVIU SOLOMON

May 25, 1927 (Bucharest, Romania) – June 7, 2013 (Paris, France)

Education

Faculty of Mathematics University of Bucharest (1945-1948) (completed four-year program in three years). PhD in Moscow, 1950-1953, under the leadership of the reputed scientist in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics – Iurii Nikolaevich Rabotnov.

Liviu Solomon worked at the Institute of Mechanics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. His thesis was considered as one of the most remarkable works of that period in the field of Elasticity. Among the major aspects covered by Liviu Solomon in his doctoral thesis are the contact of elastic bodies and fractures without plastic passage, for anisotropic bodies, and the concepts and balance of energy and entropy in Thermodynamics.

Career

Associate Professor at the Department of Elasticity, Faculty of Mathematics, University of Bucharest, 1953 – 1971.

He held courses of Elasticity and Mechanics of Deformable Mediums. He had as students: Liviu Dinu, Adelina Georgescu, Nicolae Viorel, Tudor Sireteanu, Viorel Visarion, Dragos Drãghicescu, Eugen Soos, Gheorghe Dincă, Iulian Beju, Veturia Niță (Chiroiu).

Professor at the Université de Poitiers, Laboratoire de Méchanique Théoretique, 1971 – 1992.

He collaborated with Paul Germain (secrétaire perpetuel de l’Académie des Sciences), A. Cimetière, M. Hocquemiller.

He has taught courses on: Dimensional Analysis, Material Breaking, Deformable Medium Mechanics, Computational Analysis and DEA (Deep Studies): Mechanics.
