Headquarters.
The headquarters of the Society are in the Tribune Building,
No. 154 Nassau street, New York City.

CHARTER.
An account of the founding of the Society by the Hon. Andrew
H. Green in 1895 and its subsequent development will be found
on pages sixteen to twenty-four of our Twelfth Annual Report.

The Society was originally incorporated by a special act of the Legislature of the State of New York (chapter 166 of the Laws of 1895), under the title of "The Trustees of Scenic and Historie Places and Objects,” which title was changed by chapter 302 of the Laws of 1898, to “ The Society for the Preservation of Scenic and Historic Places and Objects,” and by chapter 385 of the

Laws of 1901 to “The American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society.” It had on January 1, 1912, a total membership of 522.

Its charter reads as follows:

The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

Walter Webb, * and such others as shall become associated with them in the manner and upon the terms and conditions prescribed by the by-laws of the corporation hereby created, are hereby constituted a badly politic and corporate by the name of the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society, with all the powers and subject to the provisions of the eleventh section of chapter thirty-five of the general corporation law as amended by chapter six hundred and eighty-seven of the laws of eighteen hundred and ninety-tiro, except as otherwise provided by this act, and shall be capable of purchasing, taking, receiving and holding by gift, grant, devise, bequest, or otherwise, in trust or perpetuity, real and personal estate for the uses and purposes of said corporation, the value of which shall not exceed one million dollars. $ 2. The objects of said corporation shall be to acquire by purchase, gift, grant, devise, or bequest, historic objects or memorable or picturesque places in the State or elsewhere in the United States, hold real and personal property in fee or upon such lawful trusts
