•C A L E N D A R. • This takes its name from the Latin Word Calendæ which agnified the firft Day of every Month amongst the Romans; and which is derived from the Greek Word caleo to call : because as the Romans antiently counted their Moriths by the Motion of the Moon, they had a Priet appointed, toobserve the times of the new Moon ; who when he had seen it, gave Notice to the Presidenë of the Serifices, who called the People together, and declared to them how they were to reckon the Days until the Nonef (which were the 7th Days of March, May, July, and Daober ; and the sth of the reft of the Months)

pronouncing aloud Caleo hve Times if the Nones happened on the fifth Day; or seven times, if they happened on the 7th Day of the Month.

The design of the Calendar before the Comman Prayer is to Thew on what Days of each Month the Fasts and Festivals of the Chu ch are to be kept : and what Por. tions

of the Scriptures are to be read every Day, Morning and Evening thi oughout the Year. The Lessons for Sundays and Holy-days are mentioned separately in the first Table : and the rest are placed in a Line diie Ally opposite to the Day of the Month on which they are to be Read.

12 • This Month takes its name from Janus, of whom it is related, that he knew things paft and to come; and therefo;e they represented him with two Faces, and deified him after his death, This Deity the Romans established to bear Rule at all Beginnings.'
