taught to love and to embrace my Gospel; for the Son of Man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them.” n. Since, then--in conclusion the spirit of the Gospel has been so unhappily perverted; since both the lessons and the example of our Lord have been so frequently neglected; since, where He hath spoken of peace, humility, charity, tenderness; long-suffering, there his professed disciples have proclaimed war, pride, intolerance, tyranny since, instead of loving as brethren, they have so frequently attacked and injured each other like implacable enemies, what we on our part ought to do, in order, by all means, to avoid such 'excesses, is, to become thoroughly imbued with the spirit and grand end of the Gospel. :: To this purpose the words of our Saviour, which I have now opened to you, are admirably adapted. They teach us, that what Christ demands of us, is not speculative notions, but feelings and actions ? they teach us, that' eternal life is not proposed as the reward of holding some peculiar dogmas; but that Jesus addresses

THE HEART-that it is in the heart that he desires to secure his influence, to establish his kingdom--that his great aim is to direct its inclinations and purify its passions :« Thou sHALT LOVE GOD; THOU SHALT LOVE

THY NEIGHBOUR: THIS DO, AND THOU SHALT

LIVE."

What we, on our part, must do, is to exhibit in our families a living copy of the primitive Church, instead of confining ourselves to heaping it with barren eulogies; we must imitate the 'mild virtues practised by our Lord; our rivalry must be only who shall best fulfil his duties. Let fathers exercise a continual watch fulness, and maintain their authority over their families with firmness and discretion ; let it be the care of mothers to cultivate in the hearts of their children, those virtues of which they themselves should present the model ; let the bosoms of the young members of the Church be early expanded to the influences of unaffected piety ; let Charity and Humility, the keepers of the Temple of the Lord, be ever ready to

open its doors; let there be in the great Christian family but one heart and one mind!

What we, on our part, ought to do, is to remember that the design of the Gospel is to produce in us, not an overbearing and ostentatious sanctimony, but unassuming goodness. The Christian doctrine should operate in us like the hidden waters of a beneficent fountain, which, itself unseen, covers the land with fertility and bloom! We are not permitted to make a noisy display of our piety--to lay ourselves open for the applause of men: the sacrifices with which our Saviour is well pleased, are, solitary prayer, secret mortification, unwitnessed acts of beneficence, the devotion of a contrite and penitent heart, persevering endeavours after righteous

ness.

Let us recollect, that, as in our Saviour's time, those who leave the House of God, to return to their dwellings justified, are not the persons who need to have the eye of the world upon them, in order to stimulate them to that devotion, the source of which should be within; they are not those who are proud of their own merits, and thank God “ that they are not as other men are ;” but those who, like the trembling publican, stand afar off, not daring so much as to lift up their eyes to heaven, and cry, “ God be merciful to me a sinner!” Let us recollect, that, as in our Saviour's time, the oracles of God thus speak :—“If ye

have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not: this wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish :” now, as then, they declare : “ Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels—though I understand all mysteries and all knowledge—though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains—though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor-and though I give my body to be burned, AND HAVE NOT CHARITY, I am nothing.”

Such, My Brethren, are the precepts of that gracious law, which fills, and satisfies, and renews the soul: such are the lessons of that Divine Saviour whom it is impossible to refuse to love, and whom we are bound to obey with all our heart and with all our mind. Humility, charity, fervent piety—these virtues are the essential substance of them' all-virtues intimately related to each other, alike the offspring of Christianity. God grant that these virtues may, through Jesus Christ, purify, inflame, and ennoble our souls! "May they accompany us through our pilgrimage in this life, and

may their sweet and salutary influence direct our steps! In the hour of dissolution may they attend upon our dying bed, and finally, going before us towards heaven, cause it to open at our approach!--Amen.
