DOCUMENT No. 33.

BOARD OF ALDERMEN,

MAY 20, 1851.

The following report of the Committee on Streets, in favor widening Liberty street, from Broadway to Greenwich street, was received, laid on the table and ordered to be printed.

D. T. VALENTINE, Clerk.

The Committee on Streets, to whom was referred the annexed petitions for remonstrances against the widening of Liberty street, between Broadway and Greenwich streets, respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly considered the subject referred to them; the petitioners ask that said street may be widened by cutting off from the northerly side about five feet, from Greenwich street to the easterly side of lot No. 85, and also

by cutting off from the southerly side of said street, so much as will be required to make the street fifty-four feet in width, from Greenwich street to easterly side of lot No. 85, and thence continue the same new southerly line to Broadway. The remonstrants represent that they are opposed to the widening on the ground that if the street is widened at all it should bet aken off from the north side of the street, where the size of the lots is such as to allow the cutting off enough to make the street of sufficient width, and they oppose the measure generally as not requisite at the present time.

Your Committee upon examining the opinions of the parties interested, find

That the number of lots on north side of the

It therefore appears from the above statement, that the number of lots represented in favor of widening, nearly two to one to those opposed, besides the owners of three other lots will probably withdraw their opposition to the widening, viz: Nos. 108, 110, and 120, belonging to the Post estate.

There is no "opposition below Greenwich street, which is about one-half of the street interested in the improvement.

From these facts your Committee conclude that the improvement is demanded by those interested; the increase of business in this section of the city, and the great improvements already made and contemplated, to afford accommodations for merchants and others, no doubt require that this street should be widened, and they accordingly would recommend that the necessary measures be taken to carry the same into effect. The following resolution, providing therefor, is respectfully submitted for adoption:

Resolved, That Liberty street, between Broadway and Greenwich street, be widened, to take effect on the first day of May, 1852, and in conformity with the red lines drawn on the accompanying map, that is to say, by cutting off from the northerly side about five feet, from Greenwich street to the easterly side of lot No. 85; or five feet two inches at Greenwich street, and five feet three inches at easterly side of lot No. 85; and also by cutting off from southerly side of said street so much as will be required to make the street fifty-four feet in width from Greenwich street to easterly side of lot No. 85; and thence continuing the same new southerly line to Broadway, and the Counsel to the Corporation be, and he is hereby directed to take the necessary legal measures to carry the same into effect.
