HEREAS it appears by the Report of the Commiffioners appointed by His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, under the Act of the Legislature paffed laft Seffion, intituled "An Act for applying the fum of One Thousand Pounds "out of any unappropriated monies in the hands of His Majesty's Receiver General, "towards the improvement of the Inland Navigation of this Province," that the effect of the work already done in the removal of fome of the impediments in the rapids of Saint Louis in the River Saint Lawrence near to la Chine, has furpaffed their expectations; and that it would be of great benefit to complete the fame; and alfo to remove the impediments in the navigation for batteaux from Montreal to Lake Saint Francis, but more especially beyond la Chine: May it therefore please your Majefty that it may be enacted, and be it enacted by the King's most Excellent Majefty by and with the advice and confent of the Legislative Council and Affembly of the Province of Lower Canada conflituted and affembled by virtue of and under the authority of an Act of the Parliament of Great Britain, intituled, "An Act to repeal certain parts of an Act paffed in the fourteenth year of His Majefty's Reign, intituled, An A&t for making more effectual provi fion for the government of the Province of Quebec in North America," and to make "further provifion for the government of the faid Province;" and it is hereby ted to the Com- enacted by the authority of the fame, That it fhall and may be lawful to and for

or hereafter may be in the hands of the faid Receiver General, and which have been or fhall be levied or collected under any Act or Acts of the Legiflature thereof, and fuch fum or fums fo iffued, be applied towards the clearing and improvement of the channel of the rapids of the river Saint Lawrence between La Chine and the City of Montreal, and towards, the removal of impediments in the channel of navigation for batteaux from Montreal to Lake Saint Francis, or for improving the fame by towing paths or otherwife in fuch manner and by fuch means as fhall by the faid Commiffioners, or any two of them, be confidered moft proper and useful for effectuating the purposes abovesaid.

II. And be it further enaded by the authority aforesaid, that the said Commiffioners, or any two of them, fhall, at the next Seffion of the Legiflature, lay before the Governor, Lieutenant Governor or Perfon adminiftering the Government of the Province, the Legiflative Council and the Houfe of Affembly, respectively, a statement of the expenditure of the money now remaining from the former grant of the Legiflature, and of the abovefaid one thousand Pounds or fuch part thereof as fhall be then expended, with fuch estimates and oblervations in refpect to further improvements in the internal navigation of the River Saint Lawrence, as fhall appear to them expedient and proper, either for the ascent or defcent thereof.

III. And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, that the Inspector at a Return to the Chateaugay fhall, at the clofe of the navigation of the enfuing feafon, tranfmit to Commiffioners of the Commiffioners herein before mentioned a return of the number of fcows and that have palled rafts which fhall have paffed during the laft and present years, refpe&tively; and in fuch return, fhall specify, as far as may be practicable to him, the quantities of flour, wheat, pease, pork, pot and pearl-ashes and other produce contained in the faid fcows, and the general contents of the faid rafts, fo as to distinguish those which conveyed oak or pine timber ftaves, boards, fire-wood or other articles from each other; and a copy of the faid return, fhall, by the faid Commiffioners, be laid before the Governor, Lieutenant Governor or Perlon adminif tering the Government, the Legislative Council and the Houle of Affembly, refpectively.
