taste, so much so that its natural diet is now rejected. Its colour is green; it frequents the wooded glens of the mountainous regions, and its activity is displayed generally at night. The discovery of its cruel habit arose in this wise. About the year 1868 wounds were noticed on several sheep at the shearing season, all the scars being found on the same spot of the body. No one could account for these wounds for a long time, but at last an observant shepherd remarked some Keas visiting the killing-stations and pecking off with their beaks bits of flesh. Shortly afterwards a parrot was seen on the back of a sheep tearing out the wool and flesh at the very place where the wounds had been seen in other animals. The mystery was solved, and thenceforward the most stringent measures were adopted with a view to putting an end to these outrages, which in several cases had actually resulted in the death of many sheep. switch away the troublesome insects with branches of trees. Owing largely to the care thus bestowed upon them, the sick elephants frequently recover their wonted health and strength. Earth-eating Indians. The saying that "truth is stranger than fiction " could be verified easily in every country of the world. Take the following facts as an example. There is a tribe of Indians called Guaranos, who occupy the delta of the river Orinoco, South America, and who when the river inundates the land, take refuge amongst the trees, where they build temporary huts of branches and clay. The women light, on a small piece of floor, the fire required for cooking purposes, and hence travellers on the river often see at night, with surprise and alarm, mysterious rows of flames at a considerable height in the air. These Indians "bury" their dead by placing them in hammocks suspended from the tops of trees. Another tribe has the habit of earth-eating, a species of clay serving as their food for several months. They use it more particularly in seasons of scarcity; but, oddly enough, some of them acquire such a taste for this wretched diet, that these individuals may sometimes be seen actually tearing pieces of the clay out of huts made of it, and then putting the 'tit bits" in their mouths. It need hardly be said that a people among whom such habits as are described above are found occupy the very lowest scale of civilisation. THE LOGAN ROCK. A Smuggling Engine. Extraordinary methods have often been resorted to in order to smuggle goods into a country without paying the costomary duties, but perhaps the most novel practice of this sort is that recently recorded in Polish Russia. Information having reached the authorities that the locomotive of the express train then leaving Alexandrovo for Warsaw carried some smuggled articles, a customhouse officer accompanied the train to its destination. At the journey's end the engine was taken to pieces, and in the interior was found a secret compartment in which were concealed several parcels of silk and a large quantity of cigars. It is only fair to the driver to say that no one was more surprised than himself at the remarkable disclosures which the engine had revealed. An Elephant Hospital. Perhaps nothing better illustrates the wisdom which elephants often display than their method of treating the sick members of their community. In India the following practice has been observed in several herds. The weakly and ailing are carefully attended to by some of their stronger fellows, which, in course of time, become almost well-trained nurses in consequence of the experience thus obtained. These nurses place themselves on each side of the patient, supporting it until it is able to stand alone. They have even been noticed, when the invalids have been tormented by flies, to The Logan Rock. Not many miles from Land's End in Cornwall there is a remarkable stone, called the Logan Rock, which is certainly a natural curiosity of a rare kind. It is an enormous mass of granite weighing 85 tons, and is poised on one end with a balance so true that, on applying sufficient force, a man or woman may set it swinging gently with an up-and-down range of at least three inches. In 1824 Lieutenant Goldsmith, who was at the time in command of a gunboat cruising off the coast, in a foolish freak, dislodged the Rock, which, however, fortunately came to a standstill before it reached the sea. This deed excited great indignation, and the Admiralty insisted upon his replacing the stone at his own expense. This was done in due time, but it is said the immense cost which was incurred by the undertaking ruined the unhappy lieutenant. A FEW WORDS AS TO OUR WORK AND ITS AIMS. HE number of Officers and TH Members of the LITTLE FOLKS Humane Society has become so large that it has been found impossible to publish all the names within the usual limits of the Magazine; and I have much pleasure in stating that this month an Extra Sheet of Eight Pages is given, contaking most of the names received up to the time of going to press. The Lists will be continued from month to month as hitherto. For the information of new subscribers, and of those who are desirous of becoming Officers or Members, a few particulars concerning the LITTLE FOLKS Humane Society are again given; and readers are referred for fuller details of the scheme to the January and subsequent numbers of the Magazine. The Society was instituted at the beginning of 1882 for the purpose of inculcating in the minds of children Kindness towards Animals; and all readers of this Magazine, and all other boys or girls willing to co-operate in our undertaking, are invited to join it. To become a Member the following form of promise, which should be copied out on half a sheet of paper, must be signed : Having signed this, and the signature having been duly attested by a Parent, Minister, Teacher, or other responsible person, the written undertaking should be forwarded to "The Editor of LITTLE FOLKS, La Belle Sauvage Yard, Ludgate Hill, London, E.C.," with "LITTLE FOLKS Humane Society" written in the left-hand top corner of the envelope. On its receipt by me, the name of the sender, who will now have become a Meinber, will be inscribed in the Register of the Society; and all Members' names (with their numbers) will also be printed in LITTLE FOLKS, as showing that they belong to the Society. Certificate-cards of Membership are forwarded to all who send stamped addressed envelopes with their "promises." In order that the efforts of such of my readers as may desire to take a more prominent and active part than others in promoting the cause of Kindness to Animals may not be unrecognised, the rank of "Officer" of the LITTLE FOLKS Humane Society is conferred on every boy or girl who shall by his or her individual endeavours induce not fewer than fifty others to join it; and to each of these-subject to his or her forwarding to me their own and the fifty written "promises" by other boys or girls, with the signatures duly attested, and satisfying me that they have been obtained by their influence-the Officer's Medal of the LITTLE FOLKS Legion of Honour, and with it an Officer's certificate and a small book, is awarded. The book and medal are, in every case, forwarded by me on the publication of the names in the Magazine. All Members are eligible to become Officers, and in every case where they forward fifty "promises" subsequently to their own enrolment as Members, they should give their numbers in the Register, or the approximate date of joining. It must also be borne in mind that the fifty "promises" must be sent to me all together. In each month's number of the Magazine particulars are given concerning the LITTLE FOLKS Humane Society Special Prize Competitions, in which valuable Books and Medals are offered for Stories, Essays, Poems, and Anecdotes connected with the subject of Kindness to Animals; and selections from these contributions are printed in LITTLE FOLKS. The limit of age for enrolment in the Society is twenty-one. (On page 375 of the June Number an announcement as to the next LITTLE FOLKS ANNUALof special interest to all Officers and Members-appears, to which I invite attention.) It is with much gratification that I am enabled to announce that their Royal Highnesses the Princesses Louise, Victoria, and Maud, of Wales, have enrolled themselves as Members of the LITTLE FOLKS Humane Society; and their names will be found in this month's List, on the next page.
