Page 364 - John and you, and / will do our duty." BULE 2. — When a pronoun refers to two or more words in the singular, taken separately, or to one of them exclusively, it must be singular ; as, " A clock or a watch moves merely as it is moved.
Page i - He that undertakes to compile a Dictionary, undertakes that, which, if it comprehends the full extent of his design, he knows himself unable to perform. Yet his labours, though deficient, may be useful, and with the hope of this inferior praise, he must incite his activity, and solace his weariness.
Page 418 - Indian language is perfect in its own way, and has many beauties not to be found in our modern languages ; for instance, the verb in the Indian idiom, is the supreme chief of the language ; it draws into its magical circle, all the other parts of speech, and makes them act, move, suffer and even exist in the manner, and in such situations as is pleasing to it. In truth a learned philologist likened the verb of the Indian language to Atlas that carried the world on its shoulder.3.

Baraga says that this name (corrupted to Neome) means "I wait for game in the night on the water in a canoe," probably a clumsy translation.
Page iii - I have written, throughout, y>, t, and k. Baraga remarks that it is, in fact, " often impossible to ascertain by the pronunciation of an Indian, whether the word begins with ab or p, with ad or t, with ay or k.
Page 295 - Englishmen generally call it Manitoba, but the correct local pronunciation may be Manitoba, as that would agree very well with its derivation from the two Odiibwa words manito, spirit, and ba, shortened from waba, a strait. Lake Manitoba is so called, according to Bishop Baraga, "on account of the strange things seen and heard in the strait which joins this lake with another one, in the old times.
