Townships of the first class.

Licenses for stages, hacks. etc.

No. 122.

AN ACT

Authorizing the boards of township commissioners, of townships of the first class, to levy and collect a license-tax on stages, hacks, carriages, and other vehicles, carrying persons or property for pay, and to limit the rate of fares to be charged therefor.

Section 1. Be it enacted, &c., That the board of township commissioners, of every township of the first class within this Commonwealth, shall have power to enact ordinances requiring licenses to be taken out, annually, for all stages, hacks, carriages, and other vehicles, used for carrying persons or property for hire, within the township, and fixing a reasonable annual charge for such licenses. Also to regulate or limit the rate of fares to be charged persons using said vehicles.

Section 2. That the said ordinances shall be enforced as other township ordinances are by law enforced, and the license charges shall be collected as other licenses charges, fines and penalties are now authorized by law to be collected.

Railroads, construction of bridges over or under at expense of county.

No. 123.

AN ACT

To provide for the construction of bridges over or under existing railroads, at the expense of the county, where a public highway or a road, about to be opened, intersects or will intersect an existing railroad or railroads, and the township within which the bridges may be necessary is reasonably unable to bear the expense of the same.

Section 1. Be it enacted, &c., That when one or more existing railroads, over or under which it may be advisable, for the protection of travelers, to erect a bridge, crosses a public road or highway which may

Making an appropriation to carry into effect the act of June twenty-sixth, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-five, entitled "An act to provide for the appointment of inspectors by the Governor, for cities of the first and second class of this Commonwealth, to inspect scales, weights and measures, and providing for their compensation," approved the twentysixth day of June, one thousand eight hundred and ninetyfive.

Athletic exhibition.

AN ACT

Prohibiting athletic exhibitions of longer duration than twelve hours in each calendar day.

Section 1. Be it enacted, &c., That on and after the passage of this act, it shall not be lawful for any person or persons to promote, manage or participate in any athletic contest or exhibition, held within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in which any one of the contestants shall take part for more than twelve hours in each calendar day.

Section 2. Any person or persons who shall promote, manage or participate in such contest or exhibition, mentioned in section one of this act, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be sentenced to a fine of not less than one hundred dollars or more than one thousand dollars, or imprisonment not exceeding two years, or either, or both, at the discretion of the court.

No. 126.

A SUPPLEMENT

To an act, entitled "An act for the better and more impartial selection of persons to serve as jurors in each of the counties of this Commonwealth," approved the tenth day of April, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-seven; providing for a clerk to the jury commissioners, and regulating his compensation.

Section 1. Be it enacted, &c., That the jury commissioners of the several counties of this Commonwealth shall have authority, and are hereby authorized, to appoint a competent person as their clerk, and to fix his compensation, with the consent and approval of the county commissioners, for his employment with

said jury commissioners in preparation and in filling the jury wheel, or in drawing juries.

Section 2. Said compensation to be paid out of the respective county treasury.

AN ACT

Creating the office of assistant district attorney, in the several counties of this Commonwealth having over one hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants; providing for the appointment of one or more persons, in each of said counties, to fill said office; prescribing the qualifications, duties and terms of office of said officers, and fixing their salaries in accordance with existing legislation.

AN ACT

Making an appropriation for the establishment and maintenance of traveling libraries, authorized by act of Assembly approved the fifth day of May, Anno Domini one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine.

Section 1. Be it enacted, &c., That the sum of twelve thousand dollars, or so much thereof as may be necessary, be and the same is hereby specifically appropriated to the Free Library Commission of Pennsylvania, for the following purposes, namely:

For the payment of expenses incident to the establishment and maintenance of the traveling libraries, authorized by section two of the act of Assembly establishing the Free Library Commission of Pennsylvania, approved the fifth day of May, Anno Domini one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine, two years, the sum of eleven thousand dollars, or so much thereof as may be necessary.

For the payment of the traveling expenses of the members of the Free Library Commisison, two years, the sum of one thousand dollars, or so much thereof as may be necessary.
