U.S. Army Awards Record Contract To Massachusetts Firm For Bomb Detectors

Burlington, MA - The United States Army has awarded ITI Security the largest contract for bomb detection devices in Army history. In awarding the $1.3+ million contract, the Army's Materials Command will equip all its EOD teams with ITI's Model 97 Explosives Detector and ITI's bomb detection technology.

The US Army's Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Teams have the responsibility to provide bomb detection and handling services from both the Army and Executive branch of the government. Army EOD teams support major national and international events by screening facilities and packages. During Presidential appearances the Army EOD teams operate in concert with the Secret Service to counter bomb threats. These units will now utilize ITI Security's Model 97.

Ion Track Instruments, Inc. and its British sister company, Analytical Instruments (Ai) have over 20 years experience in bomb detection and counter terrorism, beginning with the development of bomb detection devices to foil bomb attacks in Northern Ireland. During this period, the company introduced the world's first portable bomb detection devices which sample air around a package or individual and determine accurately and instantly the presence of vapors from explosives. ITI has introduced additional products in the U.S. to further protect against bomb attacks by criminals and terrorists. In addition to being selected by the Army, ITI products are in extensive use in the U.S. nuclear power industry, and are responsible for protecting Britain's Houses of Parliment.

ITI Security is also engaged in two research contracts for the Federal Aviation Administration, addressing bomb threats against airlines. The projects deal with passenger screening. The success of the FAA contracts will improve bomb detection technology by several orders of magnitude.

Criminal and terrorist bombings have mushroomed from rare regional incidents to a large-scale interna-
tional problem of crisis proportions. In the 1,833 domestic bombings since 1976, 99% of the explosives
used were detectable by ITI equipment. These attacks have been directed at airlines, government facilities,
military installations, and organized events, as well as against individuals in government and the private
sector. As security methods (metal detectors, x-ray machines, enhanced security forces) have been
adopted, criminals and terrorists have refined their techniques.

"We are now dealing with bomb threats that x-rays cannot identify because explosives can be formed into innocent appearing shapes," says John Paderson, Sales and Marketing Manager for ITI Security. "Metal detectors will not pick these up because of the relative absence of metal in the bomb. Effective security in the future is going to require a combination of techniques including highly senistive, reliable bomb detection."

ITI Security's product line includes walk-through and hand-held bomb detection systems. In addition to products, ITI Security provides research in non-explosive substance detection, tagants, and chemical and biological warfare agents.
