Homer is commonly a subject for the third year at Trinity; at the other Colleges, those persons who are candidates for Mathematical honours are exempted from the interruption of classical lectures; the rest are kept employed upon the six first books of the Iliad and Æneid, which form the classical part of the examination for ordinary degrees.

1. Translate the following passages into English :

Ορμᾶσθαι μέν νυν ἐκ Τάραντος

καὶ ἀπικόμενον απηγέεσθαι πᾶν τὸ γεγονός.

Εἰρωτῶσι δὲ ταῦτα τοῖσι θεοπρόποισι

cap. 24.

2. Cap. 6. Οὗτος ὁ Κροῖσος, βαρβάρων πρῶτος, τῶν ἡμεῖς ἴδμεν, τοὺς μὲν κατεστρέψατο Ἑλλήνων ἐς φόρου ἀπαγωγὴν, τοὺς δὲ, φίλους προσεποιήσατο.-Explain the use of the middle verb in this passage.

3. Παρὰ τούτων Ἡρακλεῖδαι ἐπιτραφθέντες (al. ἐπιτραφέντες) ἔσχον τὴν ἀρχὴν ἐκ θεοπροπίου-cap. 7. Render this passage according to both readings ; and corroborate your translation of ἐπιτραφθέντες by quotations from Homer or Herodotus.

4. Render the words οὕτω ὧν πᾶν ἐστι ἄνθρωπος συμφορή· ἐμοὶ δὲ καὶ σὺ πλουτέειν μὲν μέγα φαίνεαι, καὶ βασιλεὺς εἶναι πολλῶν ἀνθρω πῶν· ἐκεῖνο δὲ τὸ εἴρεό με, οὔκω σε ἐγὼ λέγω, πρὶν ἂν τελευτήσαντα καλῶς τὸν αἰῶνα πύθωμαι—cap. 32. 6. Explain the use of καταφρονήσαντες in the passage καταφρονήσαντες ̓Αρκάδων κρέσσονες εἶναι—cap. 66. and distinguish κρείσσων and αμείνων.

7. "Επεμπε θεοπρόπους ἐς τοὺς ἐξηγητέας Τελμησσέων—cap. 78. Who were these ἐξηγηταί ? Where was this oracle: and who was from whom it derived its name?

10. Μῆδοι δὲ ὑπέκυψαν Πέρσησι, ἄρξαντες τῆς ἄνω "Αλους ποταμοῦ Ασίης ἐπ ̓ ἔτεα τριήκοντα καὶ ἑκατὸν δυῶν δέοντα, πάρεξ ἢ ὅσον οἱ Σκύ θαι ἦρχον—cap. 130. When did this empire of the Medes commence, and under what kings did it continue? What extent of country is to be understood by the expression ή άνω"Αλους ποταμοῦ Ασίη ; and how far, according to his history, did Herodotus's knowledge of Asia extend? What appear to have been his ideas respecting the eastern boundary of Europe beyond the Euxine?

11. Give, from Herodotus, (cap. 131, 132.) some account of the worship of the Persians, and of the ceremonies observed by them in offering up sacrifices.

12. What events in Greece occasioned the Æolic and Ionic migrations ? What extent of country, according to Herodotus, was occupied by the Ionic settlers? Name the principal cities situated within this territory.

13. Give Herodotus's description of the tower of Belus. What, according to him, were its dimensions? Give them in English feet. Did any other building of antiquity equal or exceed this in magnitude?

14. Γενομένου δὲ τούτου τοιούτου

—νῦν δὲ ἐξ ἀπροσδοκήτου σφι παρέστησαν οἱ Πέρσαι—cap. 191. Translate this passage. What is the mood, tense and voice of ἐτετάχατο ? With what tenses of the indicative mood is the particle av joined in a contingent or conditional sense?

15. Ἡ δὲ Κασπίη θάλασσα, ἔστι ἐπ ̓ ἑωυτῆς, οὐ συμμίσγουσα τῇ ἑτερῇ θαλάσσῃ τὴν μὲν γὰρ Ἕλληνες ναυτίλλονται πᾶσαν, καὶ ἡ ἔξω

στηλέων θάλασσα, καὶ ἡ Ἐρυθρή, μία τυγχάνει ἐοῦσα—cap. 202. Is this correct? If so, whence could Herodotus have derived his information? When, and by whose orders had Africa been circumnavigated before his time? Give his account of this voyage. Give the modern names of the Seas here mentioned by him. When and by what modern navigator was the Cape of Good Hope passed, and the first voyage to India made?

16. Where does Herodotus place the Massagetæ? Give his account of the expedition of Cyrus against this people. Does Xenophon's account of the death of Cyrus agree with that of Herodotus? If not, which do you consider most entitled to credit; and why?

17. Give the mood, tense, and voice of ¿dedéaro-cap. 66. of λυπεοίατο-cap. 99. οι κεχωρίδαται—cap. 140. and of ἠνείκαντο cap. 173. and write down each of these verbs in the common form.

What is also the common form of μέζων-cap. 202. οἱ τριξα (καὶ opi τpiža ¿ževpńμara έyevero--cap. 171) of öre-cap. 95. and of ἐπίπλοα—cap. 94. (..πλοῖα, ἐς τὰ ἐσθεμένοι τὰ πάντα ὅσα σφι ἦν χρηστὰ ἐπίπλου, αποπλέουσι....)

18. Mention the principal dialects of ancient Greece, and the districts where each peculiarly prevailed. Give the futures, Attice, and Ionice, of σημαίνω, καλέω, χαρίζομαι, σκεδάζω and μένω.

19. Give some account of the manner in which Lycurgus changed the constitution of Sparta (μετέστησε τὰ νόμιμα πάντα, καὶ ἐφύλαξε ταῦτα μὴ παραβαίνειν . . . . cap. 65.)

20. Draw maps; (1.) of Asia Minor within the river Halys, shewing the situation of its several provinces; the course of the Mæander, Caicus, Granicus and Halys. (2.) of Greece within the isthmus of Corinth.

21. What are the modern names of Enotria and Cyrnus mentioned in the account of the Phocæans-cap. 166, 167? Point out the situation, and give the modern name of the people called by Herodotus 'EverToí. How far westward does it appear this historian's knowledge of Europe extended?
