Government Endowment of 1890

In 1891, Alabama's share of the grants of moneys made by the General Government for the more complete endowment and support of the colleges for the benefit of agriculture and the mechanic arts, was directed to be apportioned to the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College, and the Huntsville State Colored Normal and Industrial School, in the ratio of the number of each race of legal school age to the total population of school age in the State." Since 1892, however, the appropriation for the benefit of the colored race has been vested in the Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes at Normal, Alabama.80

Miscellaneous

On May 24, 1828, Congress granted certain lands in the Huntsville Land District, amounting to 480 acres, to the trustees of the Lafayette Academy for the benefit of that institution.

An act of March 2, 1829, authorized the trustees of the Valley Creek Academy to enter a quarter section of land at $1.25 an acre, for the use of the Academy. While this act does not represent a donation of land for education, still it seems to indicate a special favor shown to the institution in whose favor it was passed.

The congressional act of March 3, 1881, establishing marine schools, provided that such a school should be located at Mobile.83
