The Cartulary of Shrewsbury Abbey, Volume 1
National Library of Wales, 1975 - Abbeys - 514 pages
Transcribed and edited by Una Rees. The National Library of Wales purchased the manuscript of the Cartulary of Shrewsbury Abbey in 1947 and has printed it here in full. The charters which have hitherto been best known are those purporting to be of the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, which describe the foundation of the Abbey. The nature of these documents is discussed by Dr. Rees, who attempts to show how far they are a reliable source for the first 60 years of the Abbey's history. In addition the Cartulary contains a wealth of thirteenth century material, including nearly 200 charters relating to the borough of Shrewsbury and many others which throw light on Welsh settlement and influence in Shropshire.
