58. The accompanying maps were prepared from other maps and data on file in the district offices, maps from other Government agencies, and other reliable sources in connection with hydrographic and topographic field surveys of the localities involved. The general maps of the Great Lakes show the localities surveyed, Federal projects, natural and artificial harbors of refuge, and other localities. The maps of the localities surveyed show the nature and extent of the improvements under consideration. The character of the bottom, as shown on the maps with appendixes I to V, was determined by probings, jettings, borings, and sampling.
