Winds from the North: Canadian Contributions to the Pentecostal MovementMichael Wilkinson, Peter Althouse Much of the scholarly focus on early twentieth-century Pentecostalism is dominated by the origins debates of the United States. The polarization between those who argue for Parham's theological contribution or Seymour's African American experiential contribution is well known. Beyond these debates scholars typically focus on the role of Americans in the development of Pentecostalism. However, the Hebden mission in Toronto, Canadian women, and the Latter Rain revival illustrate the transnational and innovative qualities of the movement. This book contextualizes the global story of Pentecostalism with some important and often neglected contributions by Pentecostals in Canada and their influence on Pentecostalism in the United States and the world. Michael Wilkinson, Ph.D. (1999) in Sociology of Religion, University of Ottawa, is Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the Religion in Canada Institute at Trinity Western University. He has published extensively on Pentecostalism including the books The Spirit Said Go and Canadian Pentecostalism. Peter Althouse, Ph.D. (2001) in Systematic Theology, University of St. Michael's College and Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto, is Associate Professor of Theology at Southeastern University, Lakeland, Florida. He has published Spirit of the Last Days: Pentecostal Eschatology in Conversation with Jurgen Moltmann (T & T Clark International) as well as journal articles and book chapters. |
