"This book represents a selection of Nobel laureate Gerhard Herzberg's speeches and remarks on key issues affecting the conduct of science, its role and value in society and culture as well as the responsibility of the scientist to speak out. The recipient of numerous honorary degrees and awards, Dr Herzberg (1904-1999) came to Canada in 1935 as a German refugee and worked at the University of Saskatchewan as well as Yerkes Observatory in Chicago, and spent over four decades working at the National Research Council of Canada. Over that period, he not only continued his groundbreaking research in atomic and molecular spectroscopy, but also spoke and wrote widely about the ever-widening impact of science on society, and was a strong advocate for worldwide peace. From the importance of excellence in research, to the need of students to have a well-rounded education in the arts, humanities and science, his words resonate still in today’s debates on science, its values, and the critical intersection with public policy."--
