About the author (2013)

Kimasi L. Browne, Ph.D., was a protégé of ethnomusicologists Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje, Cheryl L. Keyes, and Timothy Rice. While attending UCLA, he studied composition with Elaine Barkin, and studied with Philip Browne at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He joined the APU School of Music in 2001, and was the founding director of the APU Gospel Choir, serving as its director from 2001-06. Browne teaches the Graduate Seminar in Music History (19th, 20th, and 21st centuries), and developed several undergraduate ethnomusicology courses. Before arriving at APU, Browne taught at Pomona College; Whittier College; California State University, Long Beach; University of California, Riverside; and UCLA, where he founded and directed the UCLA African American Choral Ensemble (now the UCLA Gospel Choir). He has directed choirs and ensembles of various African American choral traditions for more than 30 years, and frequently presents papers, organizes panels and roundtables, and speaks at conferences. Browne's research projects have taken him to North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, and his research is widely published. Kimasi has performed piano internationally, and is also a conductor, composer, arranger, and baritone vocalist.

Jean Ngoya Kidula, Associate Professor, holds a Ph.D. from the University of California (1998), an M.M. from East Carolina University, and a B.Ed. (Music/French) from the University of Nairobi. She joined the University of Georgia in 1998 after having taught at Kenyatta University and Pomona College. She teaches African Music, African-American Music, Survey of Music Cultures of the World, Topics in World Music Cultures, History, theory and methods in ethnomusicology, Seminars in Ethnomusicology. She also directs an African Music Ensemble. Her research and publications are in African musicology, indigenous, contemporary and popular music in Africa, gospel music in Africa and Sweden, African-American religious music, and composition in Africa and the Diaspora. She also is active in the performance of religious music, African choral music, and the Medieval and Renaissance vocal repertory.
