How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon?
The bestselling, award-winning team of Yolen and Teague are back with another playful dinosaur tale--this time about a sick dinosaur child who catches the flu and must go to the doctor.
What if a dinosaur catches the flu?
Does he whimper and whine between each "At-choo"?
Does he drop dirty tissues all over the floor?
Does he fling his medicine out of the door?
Just like kids, little dinosaurs hate being sick. And going to the doctor can be pretty scary. How DO dinosaurs get well soon? They drink lots of juice, and they get lots of rest; they're good at the doctor's, 'cause doctors know best.
As in their previous book, Yolen and Teague capture children's fears about being sick and put them to rest with playful read-aloud verse and wonderfully amusing pictures.

In How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon? Many literary devices are used to make it an interesting and lovable children’s picture book. This is a very entertaining book written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by Mark Teague. One literary device used is rhyme. Some examples of rhyme in the book are: “flu and atchoo, door and floor, tail and pail and wail, scream and mean, and rest and best”. These rhymes help kids connect from page to page. It also helps them like rhyme and learn what it is and learn new words. Rhyme also makes the story have a ring so kids will like being read aloud the story. Another literary device that is used is personification. The whole book is making a dinosaur like a little kid that is sick. For example, “Does he drop dirty tissues all over the floor?” This tells what the little dinosaur is doing wrong. An example of a dinosaur doing something good: “He uses a hankie on mouth and on nose. He snuggles right down underneath the bedclothes.” By doing this young children who are having this story read aloud to them can relate to it. From this book kids can learn what to do and what not to do when they don’t feel good. They can also learn how to take care of themselves through a loved and well know character. Another literary device that Yolen uses is graphics. She puts “DOES A DINOSAUR WAIL?” all in capital letters. This puts emphasis on this question. It connects to the words because wailing is loud. It will also teach kids that they are not supposed to wail. Mark Teague has great illustrations. Through his illustrations kids can learn the names of dinosaurs for example “Gallimus” is the name of one dinosaur. Kids can also have fun trying to find the name because they are cleverly put in appropriate places. One is written on the edge of a carpet. The pictures are very detailed and they depict the emotions very well. The illustrations also have bright colors which make them appealing to the eye. Overall, How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon? is a very good children’s literature book because of the many reasons above.
