Comparison on the Effectiveness of Tendon Neuroplastic Training (TNT) Vs Eccentric Exercise in Treating Patients with Lateral Epicondylalgia

Background: Inflammation of the common wrist extensor origin, specifically on the tendon of the extensor carpi radialis brevis and extensor digitorum communis muscle, is usually presented in patients with lateral epicondylalgia. A strengthening program is usually the treatment of choice for patients with lateral epicondylalgia. A new treatment technique called tendon neuroplastic training (TNT) focuses on strengthening and motor control for patients with tendinitis of the patellar tendon and Achilles tendon. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of TNT and eccentric strengthening on patients with lateral epicondylalgia. Methods: Twenty patients with unilateral lateral epicondylalgia assigned either to a control group (n = 10) or to the TNT group (n = 10). The control group underwent eccentric exercise as a treatment for lateral epicondylalgia. With the experimental group, TNT was used. No physical therapy modalities were used. Exercise effectiveness was assessed through a pain and function score evaluation with the use of Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation (PRTEE). Results: Both eccentric exercise and TNT are effective in treating lateral epicondylalgia. There is a significant difference between both interventions from the baseline in terms of pain, functional scale, and total score from the PRTEE. However, there is no significant difference when eccentric exercise and TNT are compared. This means that the two interventions are comparable; eccentric exercise is as effective as TNT. Conclusion: These results show that TNT can be used as a new treatment technique for patients with lateral epicondylalgia.
