This book constitutes a first- or second-year graduate course in operator theory. It is a field that has great importance for other areas of mathematics and physics, such as algebraic topology, differential geometry, and quantum mechanics. It assumes a basic knowledge in functional analysis but no prior acquaintance with operator theory is required.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in learning C*-algebras and the theory of operator algebras. All proofs are given and each chapter has some very good exercises. The first 5 chapters deal mostly with operator theory. Chapter 6 readies the reader for the final chapter where the author introduces K-theory applied to C*-algebras.
This is a must read for anybody interested in the field.
