About the author (1992)

Marilyn Friend, Ph.D., has spent her career as a general education teacher, special education teacher, teacher educator, and staff developer. She is currently Chairperson and Professor of Education in the Department of Specialized Education Services at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro where she teaches coursework on inclusive practices and collaboration among service providers. She has consulted with school professionals nationally and internationally as they collaborate to educate their students, assisting them to form productive and efficient work teams, to learn the best ways to manage awkward or adversarial conversations, and to communicate effectively with parents. Her particular areas of interest include skills for collaboration, co-teaching, inclusive school practices, team building, shared problem solving, interpesonal communication, and home-school communication. She is the author (with Dr. Lynne Cook) of "Interactions: Collaboration Skills for School Professionals, 5/e" (c) 2007 and (with Dr. William Bursuck)" Including Students with Special Needs: A Practical Guide for Classroom Teachers, 4e" (c) 2006.   • has co-produced a videotape "The Power of Two" (1995) on co-teaching (two teachers working together in a single classroom) distributed by CEC as well as one called "Complexities of Collaboration "(2000) on common dilemmas that occur when professionals work closely together.
  • was recipient of a Fulbright Award to work witheducators in Portugal on topics related to professional collaboration and parent communication.
  • has been both a classroom teacher and a special education teacher.
